CENTREVILLE, VA (Oct. 21, 2010) -- Playing in the second group of the day, Blair Johnson and Dudley Payne, both from Chantilly National G&CC, blistered the tough International Country Club course with eight birdies and a single bogey for a seven-under par 64. Group after group completed play but none could put the slightest dent in the Putting Wizards' superlative score.
Payne birdied holes 1, 2, 10, 12 and 14; Johnson birdied 13, 15 and 16 while neither could par the tough 189-yard seventeenth hole, which played closer to 215 yards uphill into the wind. It was the only blemish on the card.
Favorites Michael Meyer and Brent Martin, two of the three members of the Maryland Team in the USGA State Team Championship in September - Jeff Lim-Sharpe was the third - birdied the first, bogeyed the ninth and then came home with birdies on 14, 15 and 16 to take second place at three under 68. This was one stroke better than the trio of Michael and Alex Kamargo (32-37), Robert Harwick and John Steele (35-34) and Pete Walsh and Paul Gural (34-35). Another stroke back at one under 70 were Mike Howell and Parker Williams (35-35) and Vance Welch and Bill Jenner (35-35).
