Playing in his first Palm Beach County G.A. event, Rick Woulfe of Ft. Lauderdale shoots 69 to win by 1
HOBE SOUND, Fla. – Rick Woulfe of Fort Lauderdale, playing in his first Palm Beach County Golf Association tournament Saturday, won the 13th annual Senior Classic at Hobe Sound Golf Club.
A long-time member at Lago Mar in Plantation who recently joined the Golf Club of Jupiter, Woulfe posted a streaky, three under par 69 that was still a tournament record. At one point he birdied five of six holes including four in a row starting at No. 9, then later had three bogeys in a row.
“It was a pretty solid round of golf and at one time I was six under par,” Woulfe said. “But then I had a few lapses in my putting,” with bogeys at Nos. 17, 18 and 1, the last two by three-putting. He also hit several shots to the green that were within tap-in range, then climaxed his day by sinking a 25-foot birdie putt at the 16th hole.
Woulfe, an attorney, has been one of the state’s top players for many years, earning Florida State Player of the Year honors three times and Senior Player of the Year on four occasions. He should be a factor in PBCGA senior tournaments this year. “This association has some good competition and plays a lot of good courses,” he said.
Previous 69s in the Senior Classic were by Keen Shackelford, 2004, and Steve Earsley, 2007, both on courses at PGA National.
Guy Kennen of Wellington, returning to the game after missing a couple of years for health and business reasons, was second among 68 players with 70 on an eagle, three birdies and three bogeys. He sank a 20-foot putt at the par-5 16th hole after reaching the green with driver and utility club.
Other flight winners were Bill Maronet, West Palm Beach, 50-64 age group, net 66; James Cullen, Stuart, 65-up, gross 73; and Larry Rule Sr., West Palm Beach, 65-up, net 70, on a match of cards with Bill Jaros of Hobe Sound.
Next on the PBCGA schedule: May 22-23, Mid-Senior Four-Ball, The Fox Club, and June 5-6, Stroke Play, Medalist GC. For membership information and tournament entry, go to www.pbcga.org.
