LAKE WALES, FL (February 16, 2010)--Michael Goldschmidt, of Lakeland, captured the Winter Series event run by the Florida State Golf Association at Lake Wales Country Club in Lake Wales, February 15-16. He was joined in the winner’s circle by Tim Miller, of Venice and Ray Darmstadt, of Cocoa Beach who won the Senior and Super Senior divisions respectively.
Michael Goldschmidt, of Lakeland, captured the Regular Division title in a three hole play-off. Goldschmidt carded a five-over par 77 in the first round and followed that by shooting a three-over par 75 in the final round to force a play-off with Pete DeLongchamp, of Sebring who fired rounds of 82-70. DeLongchamp’s two-under par 70 was the low round of the tournament. Goldschmidt secured the victory by making his birdie putt on the third play-off hole. George Roat, of Windermere, grabbed third place honors with rounds of 78-79 for a tournament total of 157.
Tim Miller, of Venice, grabbed first place honors in the Senior Division. Miller, the 2008 Senior Amateur Champion, followed his first round one-under par 71 with a two-over par 74. Miller made birdie on his final hole of the day to secure the victory by one stroke. Dennis Brady, of Melbourne, finished alone in second place with rounds of 74-72 for a total of two-over par 146. Mark Rubin, of Miami Beach, finished in third place with a tournament total of four-over par 148.
Ray Darmstadt, of Cocoa Beach, captured the Super Senior Division by four strokes. Darmstadt, who is 75 years young, accomplished the rare feat for the third time this season of shooting under his age. Darmstadt fired a four-over par 76 in the first round and followed that with a one-over par 73 to secure the victory. This is Darmstadt’s second victory of the season. Fred Allen, of North Venice, and Ken Couturier, of Melbourne finished tied for second place with a tournament total of 153.
Entries close February 17th for the Winter Series event at Rio Pinar Country Club, in Orlando, March 1-2. This will be the last event to earn points towards earning an exemption into the 2010 Senior Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club, in Brooksville.
The Winter Series events include eight competitions, six individual events and two four-ball events. There are three age divisions, Mid-Senior (40-54), Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 & over). The Winter Series is a great opportunity for golfers to compete in competitive events that normally may not because they do not live in Florida year round.
