With a final round of 65, Marcus Grumbles of Travelers Rest erases an eight-shot deficit and wins the South Carolina Mid-Amateur at Greenville Country Club
Starting the day eight shots behind the second round leader, Brent Roof, Grumbles knew he needed to go low on a difficult windy day. The Travelers Rest native got off to a slow start making bogey on the third hole played, but made a quick rebound birding holes 4, 6 & 9 to turn at two under par 34. Continuing his hot streak, the 33 year old Grumbles proceeded to birdie 10 and 11 before surrendering a bogey to the difficult par three 13th hole. Once again Grumbles came right back making three consecutive birdies on 15, 16, & 17 and a two putt par on the 18th to finish at 203 and one shot ahead of his nearest competitors.
Second round leader Brent Roof had a tough front nine putting him seemingly out of position. Not to go down without a fight however, Roof came back with birdies on 12, 15, 16 & 17 to have a putt to tie on the last hole. Unfortunately the putt missed high and after the missed comebacker, Roof was left in fourth position.
Finishing tied for second place was Spartanburg’s Kyle Milner and Irmo’s Steve Liebler at nine under par 204. Greenville Country Club member and 2008 SCGA Player of the Year, Lee Palms, finished alone in fifth place at 207.
The 2009 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship was conducted on the par 71 ~ 6,598 yard Riverside course at Greenville Country Club in Greenville, SC. The field consisted of 120 individuals playing 54 holes of stroke play and was cut to the low 60 and ties after the second round. The Mid-Amateur is one of 19 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 28th year of existence.
