Danny Germaine wins his third straight Palm Beach County Public Links Championship at PGA National

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL (June 7, 2009)--Danny Germaine won his third straight Palm Beach County Public Links Championship on Sunday. This time, he did it without going into a playoff.

Germaine shot 70-71—141 to win by four strokes on the Haig course at PGA National. In both 2007 and 2008, Germaine, 30, manager of the Edwin Watts golf store in Wellington, won playoffs at the West Palm Beach Golf Club, both on the first extra hole.

“I’ve been fortunate,” Germaine said. “The last two years I’ve had to come from behind but this year I was in front both days,” counting a tie for the first round lead with Michael Kartude, who slipped to fourth Sunday on 76-146.

“I hit the ball really well yesterday but I never made anything,” added Germaine, who had four birdies and two bogeys. Sunday’s round included birdies at Nos. 1, 6, 11, a 40 footer at 13, and 16; three-putt bogeys at the seventh and 14th holes; and a double bogey from the trees left of the second fairway.

The only other player to win the County Publinx three times was Rick Othmer, in 1995 and 1998-99. Othmer shot 73-72—145 here, tied for second with Robbie Dew, who had Sunday’s low round, a 70.

Daniel20Zondervan earned low net honors in the field of 75 Palm Beach County Golf Association members who do not belong to private clubs. He posted 66-71—137 with 75-80-155 on his own ball.

Qualifying for the Palm Beach Kennel Club County Amateur Championship is next on the PBCGA schedule, June 20 here on the Haig, June 27 at Quail Ridge and July 18 at Hammock Creek. The 34th annual County Amateur is scheduled July 31-Aug. 2 at Bear’s Club and Loxahatchee Club in Jupiter. For membership information and tournament entry, go to www.pbcga.org.
