The Phoenix native's season reached another milestone on Saturday, and he's booking a ticket to Merion for August
Brody Leid's breakthrough season reached another milestone on Saturday as the Phoenix native captured the 102nd Arizona Amateur Championship with a 3-and-1 victory over Sweden's Victor Larsson in the championship match at Tucson Country Club.
The win gives the rising University of Wyoming junior one of the biggest titles in Arizona amateur golf and secures an exemption into the 126th U.S. Amateur Championship at Merion Golf Club. He also earns exemptions into the next 10 Arizona Amateur Championships.
Leid entered the week in excellent form after finishing runner-up at the National Golf Invitational in May and never seemed overwhelmed by the demands of a grueling six-day championship that featured 36 holes of stroke play followed by five rounds of match play.
"I'm super proud, but it hasn't really set in yet," Leid said after the victory. "I blacked out a little bit. I was focused on playing good golf."
The championship match was close early, with only one hole changing hands on the front nine. Leid seized momentum with a birdie on the par-4 sixth to move 1-up before taking command on the back nine. He won holes 10 and 11 to build a three-hole advantage and never allowed Larsson back into the match.
"That was a good turning point where I took control of the match," Leid said of the birdie at No. 6. "I got off to a little bit of a slow start, my swing was feeling a little shaky, but I think I found something on that sixth hole."
While Leid ultimately lifted the trophy, one of the week's most compelling stories belonged to Kevin Marsh.
The 53-year-old Las Vegas resident and 2005 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion turned back the clock with a remarkable run to the semifinals. Marsh advanced through a bracket filled with players young enough to be his children before finally falling to Larsson, a collegiate golfer at the University of New Mexico who would eventually advance to the championship match.
Marsh's performance was a reminder that experience and competitive grit can still contend against the next generation of elite amateurs. His semifinal appearance was one of the deepest runs by a mid-amateur competitor in recent championship history.
The championship was contested at a challenging Tucson Country Club that yielded just 43 under-par rounds during stroke play. Players faced firm conditions, difficult hole locations, and a layout that exposed even small mistakes.
Leid handled those demands better than anyone, closing out the week by adding his name to one of Arizona golf's most prestigious trophies.
