American contenders include highly-ranked Kihei Akina from Hawai'i and BYU
A world-class field featuring golfers from 41 countries will gather at Royal Liverpool and West Lancashire Golf Club from June 15-20 for the 131st Amateur Championship, one of the most prestigious titles in amateur golf.
The Championship returns to Hoylake for a record 19th staging, with 288 players competing to join a list of champions that includes Bobby Jones, José María Olazábal, Sergio Garcia, and Matteo Manassero.
One notable absentee is defending champion Ethan Fang of Oklahoma State. Fang captured the 2024 Amateur Championship title in dramatic fashion, earning exemptions into both the 2025 Masters and U.S. Open. While most champions return to defend their title, Fang's success has him competing at Oakmont this week in the U.S. Open, making him unable to defend the championship he won just 12 months ago.
The field features some of the strongest amateur talent in the world, including one player ranked inside the top 10 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), four inside the top 25, and ten inside the top 50. Combined with a record-strength pre-qualifying field and 607 total entries, the numbers reflect the growing global demand to compete in one of amateur golf's most coveted championships.
England's Luke Poulter, son of Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter, enters as the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 9 in the WAGR. Poulter enjoyed a breakthrough collegiate season at the University of Florida and recently represented Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup.
Several highly regarded Americans will also be among the contenders.
Kihei Akina (No. 22 WAGR) arrives after an outstanding sophomore season at BYU. The Hawaiian captured medalist honors at the NCAA Bremerton Regional and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors while helping lead the Cougars to another NCAA Championship appearance. Akina has steadily climbed the amateur rankings and enters Hoylake as one of the highest-ranked players in the field.
Another American to watch is Auburn's Carson Bacha, who enjoyed a strong 2024-25 campaign that included multiple top-10 finishes and a key role in Auburn's run to the NCAA Championship. Bacha has become one of the SEC's most consistent performers and owns significant international and USGA championship experience.
Several members of the American contingent have also enjoyed strong summers on the elite amateur circuit. Players such as Jackson Koivun of Auburn, the reigning Phil Mickelson Award winner and one of the most accomplished underclassmen in college golf, and Vanderbilt standout Gordon Sargent's former teammates have helped keep American college golf firmly at the center of the global amateur game. While not every top American is in the field, the U.S. delegation remains one of the deepest among the 41 participating nations.
Great Britain & Ireland will be well represented by Walker Cup players Stuart Grehan (56) of Ireland, Scotland's Connor Graham (36), and Niall Shiels Donegan (31). South Africa's Daniel Bennett (16), Germany's Tim Wiedemeyer (28), and Akina round out the players ranked inside the world's top 30.
The Championship's international reach continues to expand. Players from 41 countries will compete this year, with Hungary and the United Arab Emirates represented for the first time. Bence Bertenyi and Rayan Ahmed become the first players from their respective nations to compete in The Amateur Championship.
Several competitors arrive with significant victories already on their résumés this season. Japan's Taisei Nagasaki finished runner-up at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, South Africa's Jack Buchanan won the Africa Amateur Championship, and France's Lev Grinberg recently captured the prestigious St Andrews Links Trophy.
Recent success at The Amateur Championship itself could also prove valuable. Ireland's Gavin Tiernan returns after finishing runner-up in 2024, while Finland's Veikka Viskari, Italy's Riccardo Fantinelli, and France's Matthis Lefevre all advanced deep into last year's match-play bracket.
Founded in 1885, The Amateur Championship remains one of the game's most historic events. Royal Liverpool hosted the inaugural Championship and this year marks the 19th time it has served as host, more than any other venue. Neighboring West Lancashire, one of the original clubs that helped fund the Championship trophy in 1886, will host stroke-play qualifying.
Following two rounds of stroke play, the leading 64 players and ties will advance to match play, culminating in a 36-hole final on Saturday.
The champion will earn exemptions into The Open Championship, the U.S. Open, a DP World Tour event, and traditionally receive an invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament, provided they remain an amateur. The runner-up will earn spots in both Final Qualifying and the Last Chance Qualifier for The Open, while all quarterfinalists receive exemptions into Final Qualifying.
