264 players. Two links. One title that's launched legends. The Scottish Men's Amateur is LIVE at Gullane
29 – 30 July 2025 · Gullane No.1 & No.2, East Lothian
On a stretch of East Lothian coastline where golf has been played for the better part of two centuries, 264 of the country's keenest amateurs have arrived chasing one of Scottish golf's most coveted prizes.
The championship is a test of nerve as much as ball-striking. Two days of stroke-play qualifying across the windswept links of Gullane No.1 and No.2 whittle the field to the low 64, who then face the unique pressure of head-to-head matchplay — where a single hole can end a championship and reputations are forged over three relentless days.
"You're not just playing a golf course. You're playing the wind off the Firth, the firm turf, and the man across the fairway."
This year the leaderboard is already telling its own story. Denmark's Mads Viemose Larsen has set the early pace, but a tightly packed chasing group means the cut for matchplay — and the championship itself — remains very much alive.
Tournament underway · Round 2 in progress. Larsen's two rounds in the 60s have opened daylight, but with cards still on the course the chase for the matchplay places is on.

The 19-year-old from Kilmacolm came through qualifying as the fifth seed, then survived a brutal matchplay run — two ties going the distance, including a 20th-hole win in the last 16 and a 19th-hole escape in the quarter-finals.
In the final against fellow student Charlie Reynolds at St Andrews' Castle Course, three birdies in a row from the 6th opened a four-hole cushion at the turn. Reynolds clawed one back, but Farmer answered at once, taking the 12th and 13th before sealing a 5&4 victory with an eight-foot putt at the 14th — joining a roll of honour that includes Montgomerie, Gallacher and MacIntyre.
First played in 1922, when John Wilson edged Edward Blackwell at the 19th hole on the Old Course at St Andrews, the Scottish Amateur remains a rite of passage for the country's finest unpaid golfers. Its roll of honour is studded with players who went on to the European Tour, the Ryder Cup and the game's major stages.
Its history holds dynasties and debutants alike: Ronnie Shade won five in a row from 1963 to 1967, Charlie Green became the oldest champion at Gullane in 1983 at almost 51, and Oliver Mukherjee the youngest at 16 in 2022.
| Champion | Year & Venue | Went on to… |
|---|---|---|
| Colin Montgomerie | Nairn, 1987 | 8 European Tour Orders of Merit; Ryder Cup great |
| Stephen Gallacher | Gailes Links, 1992 | Multiple Tour winner; 2014 Ryder Cup player |
| Robert MacIntyre | Muirfield, 2015 | Ryder Cup player and tour winner |
Golf has been played on Gullane Hill since at least 1650, and the club dates to 1882. Twenty miles east of Edinburgh, Gullane No.1 — shaped by Open champion Willie Park Jnr — climbs the hill for panoramic views over the Firth of Forth before testing players on firm, fast-running turf. With more than 40 championships to its name, including the 2015 and 2018 Scottish Opens, it is a fitting stage for the nation's amateurs.
