The 2026 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship is here. Thirty teams. Two individual qualifiers. Six days of stroke play and match play at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California — the third straight year La Costa hosts college golf's most consequential week.

The Cowboys' encore. Oklahoma State returned every starter from last year's championship team, advanced second out of the Marana regional behind Arizona, and arrives in Carlsbad chasing the program's 13th national title. The last team to repeat as NCAA champion was Alabama in 2013-14.
Auburn and Jackson Koivun's reckoning. The Tigers spent most of the spring ranked No. 1 and have the best player in college golf in Koivun, the back-to-back-to-back SEC individual champion. They advanced third out of Athens behind Vanderbilt and Louisville — a fact that does nothing to diminish their status as a title favorite. Anything less than a deep match-play run is the story.
Vanderbilt and Arizona's statements. Two regional winners that put the field on notice. Vanderbilt cruised through Athens. Arizona — playing on home soil in Marana — beat Oklahoma State to the top spot. Both arrive at La Costa with momentum and the kind of belief that wins quarterfinal matches on Tuesday afternoon.
A new individual champion guaranteed. Last year's medalist, Michael La Sasso (Ole Miss), turned pro earlier this season. Whoever lifts the individual trophy Monday earns exemptions into the 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills next month and into the 2027 Masters.
Walker Cup audition. The U.S. team for the September matches at Lahinch is taking shape in real time. Koivun is a lock. Oklahoma State's Preston Stout and Ethan Fang are returning Cuppers. The names that play well at La Costa will be on the captain's call sheet in August.

Friday through Sunday is straight stroke play across all 30 teams (five players, four scores counting). After 54 holes the field is cut. Monday's final round of stroke play decides the individual national champion outright and trims the team field to the top eight.
Tuesday and Wednesday are match play. Five-on-five, head-to-head, first team to win three points takes the match. Quarterfinals and semifinals on Tuesday, championship match Wednesday afternoon. The format has decided every NCAA team title since 2009, and it has a long history of producing finals that don't look anything like the stroke-play leaderboard.
Omni La Costa's Champions Course — recently renovated by Gil Hanse — has hosted the NCAA Championships since 2024. Auburn won there in 2024; Oklahoma State in 2025. The course rewards long, controlled drivers and creative wedge play around firm Bermuda greens. Coastal afternoon winds typically arrive by mid-round and turn approach shots into real decisions. Expect winning stroke-play totals around even par.
