Peter Uihlein wins the medal, Caleb Surratt wins a playoff, and a sour Sergio tosses his card in the trash can and goes home

The 2026 U.S. Open final qualifying held Monday at historic Dallas Athletic Club featured a mix of younger and older qualifiers for nine spots at the third major championship of the golf season at famed Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
While no amateurs qualified from the Dallas site, there were plenty of younger players led by medalist Peter Uihlein, a former World No. 1 amateur, who conquered the field with rounds of 67-66—133. He had a one-shot victory over PGA Tour veteran Tom Kim, who shot 66-68—134, making his fifth straight U.S. Open appearance, and former Baylor University star Cooper Dossey, who posted rounds of 70-65—135 and is making his first U.S. Open appearance.
Also making the U.S. Open field, which offered nine spots and two alternate positions at Dallas Athletic Club, the site of the 1963 PGA Championship, was former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, who was forced to qualify after his 10-year exemption expired.
Others to qualify included T.K. Kim, a Dallas Athletic Club member who birdied the final hole to secure his U.S. Open berth.
“It’s thrilling, it really is,” Kim said.
Former Tennessee standout Caleb Surratt grabbed the final Open spot by winning a six-for-one playoff with a 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole.
Uihlein, who hasn’t played in the U.S. Open since 2018, didn’t even stick around to claim medalist honors, telling tournament officials, “I got to get to the airport for a flight to Korea. They won’t wait.”
Dossey, who has already racked up three top-10 finishes on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, has toiled in the shadows of his more successful Baylor teammate Johnny Keefer. Now, however, the two will be together at Shinnecock, June 18-21.
“I’ve never been to a major in person and don’t know anything about Shinnecock other than it’s a hard course and hard to find a place to stay, but I’m ready to do both,” Dossey said.
Dossey graduated from Baylor in 2021 and has spent time on both the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour.
“It’s a dream come true for this to be my first major. I’ve gotten off to a good start this year on the Korn Ferry Tour, and that’s helped my confidence,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to playing some practice rounds with Johnny and maybe even some tournament rounds. I’m happy for his success, and he texts me a lot.”
Keefer is actually staying at Dossey’s Dallas-area house this week while playing in the PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson tournament, while Dossey is competing in a Korn Ferry Tour event in Knoxville, Tennessee.
“I’ve got three Korn Ferry events in a row and then the U.S. Open. I can’t wait,” Dossey said.
Kim has played in four straight U.S. Opens before having to qualify this year, but said any chance to compete in a major was worth the effort of the long day.
“It doesn’t matter how you make it into a major, it’s a special accomplishment. I took this day very seriously, like playing in a tournament, but it was worth it,” Kim said.
Former Masters champion Sergio Garcia will miss the U.S. Open for the second straight year after shooting rounds of 73-68 and missing the playoff by two shots. After his round, he tossed his scorecard into a trash can and walked silently to the club parking lot. Former Masters champion Danny Willett was a WD before the day started.
Ty Adkins of Hutchinson, Kansas, had the best finish by an amateur player with rounds of 68-72—140. He made bogeys on holes 16 and 18 during the afternoon round, costing him a chance to make the playoff by a single shot.
