South African junior delivers one of the most dominant performances in amateur golf history, tying a PGA TOUR scoring record
South Africa’s Andries van der Vyver just delivered the latter.
At the 2026 Nomads SA Boys U19 Stroke Play Championship, the 18-year-old Strand Golf Club standout carded rounds of 67-64-62-64 to reach an astonishing 35-under-par total of 257 at East London Golf Club. In doing so, Van der Vyver didn’t just win. He matched Hideki Matsuyama’s PGA TOUR record for lowest 72-hole score relative to par, set at The Sentry in 2025.
Let that sink in for a moment. A junior amateur, still finishing out his U19 career, just equaled one of the most remarkable scoring feats ever recorded at the highest level of professional golf.
Van der Vyver’s dominance wasn’t subtle. It was overwhelming.
He finished 18 shots clear of the field, turning one of South Africa’s premier junior championships into a runaway. Runner-up Dewan de Bruin posted a respectable 16-under-par, a number that wins many elite amateur events. This week, it barely registered.
Van der Vyver opened with a 6-under 67, followed with a 9-under 64, then surged into record territory with an 11-under 62 in the third round. He closed with another 64, making birdies on the final two holes to reach 35-under.
That added up to 33 birdies, two eagles and just two bogeys over 72 holes.
“I reached the 14th in the final round at 33-under, and I knew it was on then,” Van der Vyver said. “I made a couple of good par-saves on 15 and 16 and then managed to make birdies on 17 and 18.”
After a third-round 62 pushed him to 26-under, Van der Vyver wasn’t just thinking about winning. He was thinking about history.
“When I finished the third round at 26-under-par, I decided that I really had to try to get to 34-under,” he said. “To get to 35 is just incredible.”
That number matters.
The previous championship record of 34-under was set by Daniel Bennett in 2023 at Pecanwood. Van der Vyver surpassed it and then kept going, joining Matsuyama as the holder of the lowest winning score to par in a 72-hole tournament.
East London Golf Club was gettable, with light wind and rain during the second and third days making the greens more receptive. But conditions alone don’t produce 35-under totals.
Execution does.
Van der Vyver converted chances, avoided big numbers and kept the pressure on for four straight rounds. His only two bogeys came on the same hole, the par-4 13th, once in the opening round and once in the final round. He offset those with two eagles, one at the par-5 first in Round 1 and another at the par-5 11th in the final round.
The timing makes the performance even more significant.
Van der Vyver entered the championship fresh off an individual win at the All Africa Junior Team Championship in Kenya, where he also helped South Africa secure its 19th consecutive team title. But this one carried extra weight.
“This is the big one for me,” Van der Vyver said. “It’s such a great way for me to sign off on my junior years and it’s an honour for me to get my name on the trophy.”
That trophy has featured some serious South African golf royalty, including Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Dylan Frittelli, Thriston Lawrence and Jayden Schaper. Van der Vyver didn’t just join that list. He may have just set a new standard within it.
Despite the historic stroke play performance, Van der Vyver’s week is not over.
The top 32 players from the stroke play championship advanced to match play, with a 36-hole final scheduled to decide the Match Play title. It is a different format, and sometimes a ruthless one, especially for a player coming off a runaway stroke-play win.
Still, Van der Vyver has no plans to ease off.
“Now it’s all about the match play,” he said. “I don’t want to take my foot off the pedal just yet.”
It is rare for a junior amateur performance to resonate beyond its own championship. This one does.
Matching Matsuyama’s 35-under total places Van der Vyver in elite company across all of golf, not just junior or amateur circles. It is the kind of result that signals more than current form. It hints at a player who may be ready for much bigger stages.
For those tracking the next wave of global amateur talent, this is a name to remember.
Because weeks like this don’t happen by accident.
