After a car accident and a slow start, Andrew Haswell rallies with weekend 70s to claim the title in dramatic fashion
Andrew Haswell turned a chaotic weekend into a career-defining win, overcoming a car accident and a slow start to capture the Welsh Men’s Open Stroke Play Championship at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club.
The Ormskirk golfer posted rounds of 74-75-70-70 to finish at 5-over 289, tying fellow Englishman Tom Hughes, who carded 79-68-68-74.
Haswell trailed early but found his rhythm when it mattered most. Back-to-back rounds of 70 over the weekend pulled him into a share of the lead, setting up a playoff with Hughes, who had surged into contention with consecutive 68s before a closing 74.
The playoff returned to the 10th hole, where the tournament was decided. Hughes’ 10-foot par putt slid past the edge, and Haswell calmly converted his own par to secure the victory.
The win carried added weight. On Saturday morning, Haswell’s car was struck near the course, leaving him shaken but able to continue. He responded with composure, producing the best golf of his week over the final two rounds.
It marks a significant step forward for Haswell, who recorded three top-10 finishes in 14 ranked events last year, including a fourth-place finish at the Lancashire Links Trophy.
