The Trojans surge ahead at Pasatiempo behind Jack Buchanan, setting up a tight race for the team title
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The 79th Western Intercollegiate has taken a decisive turn at the midway point, with Southern California surging into the lead after a dominant second round at historic Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The Trojans now sit at 16-under through 36 holes, creating separation from a tightly packed field that was nearly indistinguishable after the opening round. California, the first-round leader, now trails in second at 11-under, while BYU and Chattanooga are tied for third at 4-under.
USC’s move was powered by a complete team performance, highlighted by one of the lowest rounds of the championship. The Trojans flipped the script after an even-par opening round, turning in a remarkable 16-under team effort in Round 2 to seize control of the tournament.
California remains firmly in contention despite losing the lead, while BYU and Chattanooga have quietly positioned themselves within striking distance heading into the final day.
Individually, Jack Buchanan has emerged as the player to beat, vaulting to 11-under after a spectacular second round. His surge has been matched by teammate Jaden Dumdumaya, giving USC a powerful one-two presence atop the leaderboard.
San Diego State’s Harry Takis sits just behind at 7-under, while first-round co-leader Taishi Moto remains in contention despite a quieter second round.
With scoring swings proving dramatic at Pasatiempo, no lead is safe. The course’s firm greens and strategic demands continue to reward aggressive but precise play, setting the stage for a compelling final round.
Pasatiempo Golf Club, designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, remains one of the premier tests in collegiate golf. Recently restored to its original vision, the par-70 layout emphasizes shot-making, precision iron play, and elite green reading—traits that have defined the leaderboard this week.
With the Blue Jacket on the line, the final round promises a high-level showdown between some of the nation’s top programs and rising individual stars.
