The Golden Bears hold a slim edge at Pasatiempo, while a crowded leaderboard sets up a pivotal second round
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The 79th Western Intercollegiate is already delivering the drama expected from one of college golf’s most prestigious events, with a tightly packed leaderboard emerging after the opening round at historic Pasatiempo Golf Club.
California set the early pace with a 7-under 343, holding a narrow one-shot advantage over UNLV as just five strokes separate the top six teams heading into Round 2.
The Golden Bears were led by Trevor Cox, whose 4-under 66 places him firmly in contention individually, while providing a critical counting score for a California team looking to defend its early advantage.
Stanford and Arizona remain well within striking distance, setting up what should be a volatile second round on a course known for rewarding precision and creativity.
At the top of the individual leaderboard, Taishi Moto (Arizona) and Evan Rogers (Chattanooga) share the lead after matching 5-under 65s. Both players navigated Pasatiempo’s challenging greens with precision, capitalizing on scoring opportunities while avoiding costly mistakes.
Just one shot back, Cox and Stanford’s Dean Greyserman sit in a tie for third, while a deep group at 3-under—including UNLV’s Trevor Lewis—keeps the leaderboard crowded heading into Tuesday.
Pasatiempo Golf Club, a Dr. Alister MacKenzie design, is widely regarded as one of the finest and most strategic layouts in the United States. Recently restored to its original vision, the par-70 course demands precise iron play and elite course management—making scoring runs difficult to sustain.
With television coverage set to begin on Golf Channel and scoring conditions expected to remain firm, Round 2 will be critical in separating contenders from the pack in Santa Cruz.
