Seahawks close with 11-under 277 to win by nine at home as Gray Mitchum claims a share of the individual title again
UNC Wilmington took control on the final day and never looked back, closing with an 11-under 277 to win the Seahawk Intercollegiate by nine shots at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The Seahawks posted rounds of 283-286-277 to finish at 18-under 846, turning a three-way tie after 36 holes into a comfortable home win. Duke finished runner-up at 9-under 855 (276-295-284), while VCU placed third at 2-under 862 (281-288-293). They were the only three teams in the 15-team field to finish under par.
The victory was UNCW’s seventh at the Seahawk Intercollegiate and its second straight in the event. It also gave the Seahawks back-to-back tournament wins for the first time in four seasons after last week’s title at the ECU Intercollegiate.
In the individual race, UNCW graduate student Gray Mitchum and Duke senior William Love shared medalist honours at 6-under 210. Mitchum, coming off his win at the ECU Collegiate, carded 68-72-70, while Love, the 2022 Georgia Amateur champion, matched him with 67-72-71.
UNCW nearly swept the top of the board. Senior James Rico tied for third at 4-under 212 alongside Jacksonville senior Daniel Montalvo, and junior Preston Worch finished T-5 at 3-under 213 (73-72-68). That gave the Seahawks three players inside the top five.
Statistically, UNCW led the field with 71 birdies, 13 more than Duke.
