Winners of the U.S. Women’s Amateur, Women’s Amateur Championship, Augusta National Women’s Amateur, and NCAA
The LPGA announced a new initiative designed to strengthen the pathway from elite amateur golf to the professional ranks, revealing that winners of four of the game's most prestigious amateur championships will receive exemptions into the 2026 Standard Portland Classic.
Under the new program, exemptions into the LPGA Tour event will be awarded to the 2026 winners of the U.S. Women's Amateur, The Women's Amateur Championship, Augusta National Women's Amateur, and the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship individual title.
The Standard Portland Classic is scheduled for Aug. 13-16 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Oregon. The LPGA said the exemptions were created in collaboration with the United States Golf Association, The R&A, Augusta National, and the NCAA.
The announcement marks the first time winners of all four of those amateur championships will have the opportunity to compete in the same LPGA Tour event.
"This is about deepening our connections across the game and aligning around a shared commitment to the future of women's golf," said LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler. "We're proud to stand alongside the USGA, The R&A, Augusta National, and the NCAA in creating a clear pathway from amateur excellence to professional golf."
Kessler added that the initiative reflects a broader effort to align the women's game and create more opportunities for top amateur players to compete against the best players in the world.
The four championships included in the new exemption category already play a major role in shaping the future of women's golf. Their winners have traditionally received exemptions into at least one of the women's major championships, including the Chevron Championship, U.S. Women's Open, Amundi Evian Championship, and AIG Women's Open.
Now, the Standard Portland Classic will offer another meaningful step for those players, giving them a direct opportunity to test their games in a regular LPGA Tour event.
The move also gives the Portland Classic a unique identity on the schedule, as it will bring together champions from the leading amateur events in the United States, Great Britain and Ireland, college golf, and Augusta National's premier women's amateur championship.
One of the longest-running events on the LPGA Tour, the Standard Portland Classic has long served as a proving ground for amateurs and emerging professionals.
In 2025, four amateurs competed in the field, with three entering on sponsor invitations. Among them was World Amateur Golf Ranking No. 1 Kiara Romero, who made the most of the opportunity by finishing inside the top 10.
That recent success only adds more intrigue to the new exemption model, which could make the 2026 Portland Classic one of the most compelling stops on the LPGA calendar for fans of amateur golf.
For AmateurGolf.com readers, the story is especially notable because it creates a rare crossover moment between the amateur championships that define the season and an LPGA Tour event that will now serve as a direct showcase for the game's next wave of stars.
