Lisa Coetzer edges Van de Vyver 2 & 1; 13-year-old Huxham wins flight title

15-year-old Lisa Coetzer completed her redemption story in style, capturing the South African Women’s Amateur Championship at The Els Club Copperleaf, while 13-year-old Gemma Huxham delivered a fearless finish to win the Flight Division title.

For Coetzer, this one carried weight. A year after losing in both the SA Women’s Stroke Play and the Amateur Championship finals, she returned determined not to let another opportunity slip. The No. 9 ranked player on the GolfRSA Women’s rankings edged Kaitlyn van de Vyver 2 & 1 in a gripping 36-hole final that swung until the closing stretch.

“Losing in both events fuelled me quite a bit,” Coetzer said. “I know how it feels to get to the final and then lose. I worked really hard to get here, and I’m proud of how I handled myself this week.”

She trailed after the opening 18 holes and was 1 down late in the match before producing a decisive surge. A birdie at the reachable par-five 33rd squared the contest. On the drivable 34th, she chipped close and converted to move ahead. At the 35th, a precise pitching wedge from 123 metres to six feet set up the winning moment, which she calmly converted to close out the championship.

The victory continues a remarkable run. Just two weeks ago, Coetzer won the Africa Women’s Amateur Invitational by two strokes after three steady rounds of 72-72-72. In 2025 alone, she played 19 ranked events, claiming six titles — the North West Women’s Open, Nomads SA Girls Rose Bowl Stroke Play Championship, Limpopo Women’s Junior, KZNLGA Junior Championship, SA Women’s 72 Hole Team Championship and Mpumalanga Open — along with four runner-up finishes.

In the Flight Division, Huxham showed maturity beyond her years. Facing former champion Charlene Oosthuizen, she was two down before the turn but reset mentally and clawed her way back. She levelled at 14, won 15 and 16, and closed out a 2&1 victory.

“If you want to get a scholarship, this is a really good title to add,” Huxham said.

Two teenagers. Two titles. And a championship week that underscored the depth of young talent in South African women’s golf.
