  • Live Scoring (All Divisions): Click here
  • Format: 36-hole stroke play across Championship, Senior Championship, and Net divisions (Women compete within Championship with a separate race when applicable).
  • Course note: Pacific Grove is two personalities in one—traditional parkland up front, then an exposed ocean-side finish where wind and trajectory control decide everything.
Round 1

Carter Guy Hays Sets the Pace at Pacific Grove; Humphrey and Julie Hu Lead Senior & Women

Feb. 21–22, 2026  •  Pacific Grove Golf Links  •  Pacific Grove, California

The AmateurGolf.com 2026 Pacific Grove City Championship is underway, and Round 1 produced exactly what this venue promises: early scoring opportunities, followed by a back-nine stretch that asks players to flight it, shape it, and commit with the Pacific Ocean in full view.

On Saturday, Carter Guy Hays grabbed the early lead in the Championship Division with a 5-under 65. In the Senior race, Russell Humphrey opened with 68 (-2) to lead, while Julie Hu posted a sharp 67 (-5) to set the pace in the Women’s scoring.

Field Notes: Big Names, Returning Champs

The 2026 field is loaded with familiar tournament hardware—and one of the biggest storylines is the return of NCGA Hall-of-Famer Randy Haag, who is in the field again this week and opened Round 1 with 71 (+1) in Senior Championship.

Last year’s Championship winner Mitchell Hoey (2025 champion) is not listed in the 2026 player list you provided, meaning the Championship Division is guaranteed a new winner in 2026. Meanwhile, past division champions and contenders—Russell Humphrey, Pete Higgins, Craig Calkins, Butch Pirrone, Robin Carew, Matt Brody, and John Borrelli—are back in the mix.

Round 1 Storylines to Watch

  • Championship at the top: Hays leads at -5, but there’s a crowd right behind at -4, setting up a Round 2 chase where one windy stretch can flip the board.
  • Senior race is stacked: Humphrey leads early, with O’Connor and Palmaer right on his heels. Haag’s +1 keeps him firmly in the hunt heading to Sunday.
  • Women’s pace-setter: Julie Hu’s 67 is the round of the day in that race, and the group behind is still within striking distance if the ocean holes play tougher in Round 2.

Flashback: What Happened in 2025

In 2025, Mitchell Hoey stole the show with a spectacular closing 6-under 64 to win at 8-under (68-64). In the Senior Division, Bob McCallister won in a playoff over Daniel O’Connor and Russell Humphrey, while Randy Haag finished just off the podium in solo fourth.

With Hoey not in the 2026 player list, the Championship trophy is wide open—and Round 1’s lead pack suggests this one will come down to who handles the ocean-side finish with the steadiest ball flight.
