Championship format and field

Both the men’s and women’s championships are conducted as separate 72-hole stroke play competitions, each featuring a cut after 36 holes. The top 36 players plus ties in both the men’s and women’s fields will advance to compete over the final two rounds.

The 2026 fields feature 87 elite male amateurs and 84 elite female amateurs from around the world, with entries determined through World Amateur Golf Ranking position, national federation exemptions, and international selection criteria. All positions for the 2026 championships have been filled, underscoring the event’s global demand and competitive stature.

The championships are fully sanctioned by Golf Australia and are World Amateur Golf Ranking counting events for both the R&A and the USGA. At the conclusion of the 2025 season, the Australian Master of the Amateurs ranked as the highest-rated men’s and women’s amateur championships in Australia by WAGR.

Southern Golf Club returns as host

Southern Golf Club once again provides the stage, offering a championship-caliber test that consistently rewards precision, patience, and composure. A practice round will be held on the morning of Monday, January 5, followed by the AM-AM Teams Challenge that afternoon, setting the tone for a full week of competition.

Spectator entry and parking are free throughout the championship, continuing the event’s tradition of accessibility for fans. Live scoring and streaming coverage will allow a global audience to follow along, while the final round and Green Jacket presentations will be broadcast live on Foxtel and Kayo on Friday, January 9.

Looking back: Gilligan and Yang claim Green Jackets

The 2025 championships produced memorable finishes on both sides. In the men’s championship, Florida standout and Western Amateur champion Ian Gilligan captured the Green Jacket with rounds of 68-64-70-72 to finish at 14-under par.

Gilligan held off a late charge from first-round leader Kai Komulainen, who birdied holes 16 and 17 to pull even late on Sunday. Gilligan responded with a clutch birdie on the par-4 18th to secure a one-shot victory.

Harry Takis finished solo third at 12-under, followed by Jye Halls and Billy Dowling rounding out the top five.

In the women’s championship, Hyojin Yang delivered a composed final-round performance to surge past 54-hole leader Ella Scaysbrook and claim the Green Jacket at 6-under par. Yang overcame an early stumble before closing with birdies to win by two shots. Scaysbrook finished second, with defending champion Rianne Malixi in third.

What to watch in 2026

With world-ranking points, international visibility, and elite competition on the line, the Australian Master of the Amateurs continues to be a defining early-season championship for the world’s top amateurs. The dual men’s and women’s format, combined with strong broadcast coverage and championship presentation, places competitors firmly on a global stage.

From rising international talents to established top-ranked players, the 2026 edition once again promises drama, depth, and championship moments worthy of an event long regarded as one of the finest amateur championships in the world.

Past men’s champions include Lukas Michel, Sahith Theegala, and Aaron Wise, reinforcing the tournament’s reputation as a launchpad for future stars of the professional game.
