DAY 1 RECAP: AmateurGolf.com Two Man Links & Father Son at Torrey Pines
La Jolla, CA
Torrey Pines is known for its dramatic cliffs and Pacific vistas, but for the opening round of the AmateurGolf.com Two Man Links & Father-Son Championship, the scenery was replaced by a thick, white wall of fog.
As the field arrived on Thursday morning, a heavy coastal marine layer created a "dystopian" atmosphere. Visibility was reduced to less than 30 yards for the first hour of play, rendering laser range finders useless. Players were forced to rely on yardage books and intuition, firing shots into the mist and hoping for the best. Despite the eerie start, the quality of play remained remarkably high.
Tour-Level Conditions
The field is facing Torrey Pines in its most demanding state. With the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open just one month away, the rough is extremely thick and penal. Playing both the North and South courses, amateurs are getting a taste of professional-grade conditions at one of the most storied venues in American golf.
Father-Son Division: Team Canada Rises to the Top
In the Father-Son Championship, Aiden Canada and Darren Canada (Murrieta, CA) mastered the misty conditions to card an impressive 3-under 69. They lead a deep field where every shot out of the thick rough proved to be a battle.
Father-Son Top 5 – Round 1 Gross
- Aiden Canada + Darren Canada 69 (-3)
- Donald Miller + Zachary Miller 70 (-2)
- Jeremy Smith + Michael Smith 72 (E)
- Connor O'Toole + Thomas O'Toole 72 (E)
Two Man Links (Open) Division: Syta & Ramos Lead
The duo of Dale Syta and Mark Ramos sits in the pole position in the Open Division. Their 1-over 73 was enough to secure a two-shot lead on a day where finding the fairway was the only way to survive the "buttoned up" tournament setup.
Two Man Links Top 3 – Round 1 Gross
- Dale Syta + Mark Ramos 73 (+1)
- Jeff Lane + Robert Stone 75 (+3)
- Barry Castle + Russell Johnson 76 (+4)
As the fog lifted and revealed the Pacific, the challenge didn't let up. Players will return for the final round tomorrow, hoping for clearer skies but expecting the same grueling rough that makes Torrey Pines a world-class test.
