Discover how Yamashita smashed records and left champions trailing in his monumental Mid-Amateur victory

Daisuke Yamashita completed a wire-to-wire victory at the 29th Japan Mid-Amateur Championship, cruising to a record-breaking eight-shot win at Takinomiya Country Club in Ehime Prefecture on Friday.

The Nagasaki CC golfer started the final round with a five-shot cushion and never looked threatened. Playing steady, patient golf, he added a one-under front nine and closed with three more birdies on the back to sign for a composed 70. His 10-under total set a new championship scoring record for 54 holes, as did his eight-stroke winning margin.

Yamashita’s dominant week also marked a notable shift in an event traditionally ruled by seasoned champions. While the Mid-Amateur has often crowned repeat winners, the 33-year-old claimed his first national title with complete authority, becoming the first new champion in several years to win in such commanding fashion.

Behind him, former winners found little momentum. Defending champion Kazuma Inaba faded to a T-6 finish at three-over, while five-time champion Yutaka Toyoshima finished outside the top five at four-over. Daiki Hirano of Eagle Point GC finished runner-up at two-under, while Akio Mizukami and Yojiro Mikami shared third at one-over.

The championship now moves to Otone Country Club’s West Course for its 30th anniversary edition in 2026, where the question will be whether anyone can match Yamashita’s level — or prevent a new era from beginning.
