Vanderbilt freshman Jon Ed Steed closed with a 65 to win the Magnolia Amateur at 14-under par.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Vanderbilt incoming freshman Jon Ed Steed capped off a stellar week at Hattiesburg Country Club with a final-round 65 to win the 14th Magnolia Amateur by one shot. His 54-hole total of 14-under-par 199 (66–68–65) held off hard-charging contenders Grant Doggett (-13) and Jackson Benge (-12).
Steed, from Enterprise, Alabama, caught fire on the back nine Thursday, carding five birdies in a seven-hole stretch from Holes 11 through 17. With poise beyond his years, the 18-year-old closed with a clutch par on 18 to secure the win and the $1,000 top prize.
Steed becomes the third Vanderbilt player to win a summer amateur title in 2025, joining teammates Ryan Downes (117th Massachusetts Amateur) and Carlos Astiazaran (North & South and Mexican National Amateur).
Round 1 leader Grant Doggett (University of Houston) posted rounds of 63–70–67 and finished solo second at 13-under 200. Jackson Benge (Lipscomb) followed in third with 68–65–68 for 201.
With a deep field of elite collegiate and mid-amateur talent, the Magnolia Amateur once again delivered a thrilling finish — and introduced another rising name to watch on the amateur and collegiate circuits.
Founded in 2012, the Magnolia Amateur has quickly become one of the premier summer events in amateur golf. With its PGA Tour lineage—Hattiesburg CC hosted the Magnolia Classic for 25 years—the tournament honors its history while showcasing the next generation of stars.
The field features elite individuals and college duos competing in a team format. Past champions include standout amateurs from schools like LSU, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt—many of whom have gone on to compete at the highest levels.
Hattiesburg Country Club, founded in 1919 and rebuilt at its current location in 1959, is a par-72 Max Maxwell design. The club has hosted U.S. Amateur qualifiers, Mississippi State Amateurs, and served as home to the PGA TOUR's Magnolia Classic from 1968 to 1993. Major champions like Payne Stewart, Fred Couples, and Craig Stadler have walked these fairways.
