A Championship Performance in the Texas Heat
In the blazing Dallas sun, Hamilton Coleman delivered the performance of a lifetime, claiming the 77th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship with a hard-fought 2 & 1 win over Vietnam’s Nguyen Anh Minh.
At just 17 years old and ranked outside the top 600 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), the Georgia native stunned the field with composure, creativity, and clutch putting. Coleman built a commanding lead early, going 5 up through six holes in the morning round, then held off a spirited charge by Minh during the final stretch at Trinity Forest Golf Club.

A Dream Realized for a Georgia Bulldog
Coleman, a product of West Lake Country Club in Augusta and a 2022 finalist in the Drive, Chip & Putt at Augusta National, had experienced a quiet summer before arriving in Dallas. But he found his spark at just the right time. He entered match play only after surviving a seven-hole playoff at 1-under in stroke play, then blazed through the bracket:
- Def. Isaiah Igo (Playoff)
- Def. Opponents in rounds of 64, 32, 16 by margins of 4&3, 2&1, 2&1
- Def. Luke Colton (No. 26 WAGR) – 5&4 in Semifinal
- Def. Tyler Watts (No. 42 WAGR) – Round of 16
With a bag full of confidence and a hot putter, Coleman becomes the first future Georgia Bulldog to win the title since Brian Harman in 2003.
Minh Nguyen Makes History
While he fell just short, Nguyen Anh Minh’s run was historic. The 18-year-old became the first Vietnamese player to reach a USGA final. He defeated standout names like Nicholas Gross and Qiwou Wu and played inspired golf all week, earning admiration from both fans and fellow competitors.
“To say I’m the first from Vietnam to make it to the final — it’s remarkable,” said Minh, who will attend Oregon State this fall.
What’s Next for Coleman
As champion, Coleman earns:
- Exemption into the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills
- A start in the 2025 U.S. Amateur at The Olympic Club
It’s a defining moment in a career that’s only just beginning — and a resounding message to the amateur golf world: Hamilton Coleman has arrived.
“I'm just here to play for the love of the game. Show my gifts.” — Hamilton Coleman

About the 2025 Host Venue
Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas is a bold modern design by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Built atop a reclaimed landfill, it’s a links-style layout with firm, wide fairways and complex green surrounds. The course measures 7,344 yards (Par 71) and previously hosted the PGA TOUR’s AT&T Byron Nelson.
Co-host Brook Hollow Golf Club, designed by A.W. Tillinghast and restored by Keith Foster, brings classic architecture into the mix for the stroke play rounds with a par-70, 7,049-yard layout. Together, they will test every aspect of a junior player's game.
Insights from 2024: Gutschewski’s Underdog Triumph
Last year at Oakland Hills, Trevor Gutschewski delivered a breakout performance, becoming the first Nebraskan to win the U.S. Junior Amateur. Entering ranked No. 3,570 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, he shocked higher-seeded opponents—including top seed Blades Brown in the Round of 32—before defeating Tyler Watts in the final, 4 and 3.
Gutschewski’s win was defined by mental toughness and creativity. He survived a 23-hole opener and later holed out for eagle in the championship match. Watts, meanwhile, solidified his spot as one of the top young American prospects and returns in 2025 as a favorite.
What to Watch in 2025
- Can Watts Get Redemption? After finishing runner-up in 2024, Tyler Watts leads a motivated group aiming to hoist the trophy this year.
- International Intrigue: Players from Ireland, Vietnam, China, and New Zealand reached match play in 2024. Expect the global presence to grow.
- Major Championship Pedigree: 2025 U.S. Open qualifier Mason Howell and R&A Boys champion Viggo Olsson Mork bring serious firepower.
- Texans on Home Turf: With Trinity Forest and Brook Hollow as hosts, look for local standouts like Luke Colton and Henry Guan to make noise.
Championship Format
The championship begins with two days of stroke play (July 21–22). The top 64 players advance to a six-round match play bracket:
- July 21–22: Stroke Play (Rounds 1 & 2)
- July 23: Round of 64
- July 24: Rounds of 32 and 16
- July 25: Quarterfinals and Semifinals
- July 26: 36-hole Championship Match
Players will need stamina and consistency across a grueling week, often playing 36 holes per day during match play rounds.
