High school junior Mason Howell fired two bogey-free 63s to qualify for the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont.
At just 17 years old, Mason Howell has earned a spot in the 2025 U.S. Open after a sensational showing at Final Qualifying.
The high school junior from Thomasville, Georgia, went bogey-free and carded back-to-back 63s at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta, finishing at 18-under-par to tie for medalist honors alongside Jackson Buchanan. The 36-hole event, often called “Golf’s Longest Day,” featured top amateurs and PGA Tour professionals—including 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson.
“That was one of the greatest moments of my life,” Howell said after the round.
A junior at Brookwood High School and committed to the University of Georgia, Howell helped his team win a Georgia state championship last month and claimed low medalist honors in a playoff. His junior golf résumé includes wins at the 2023 Billy Horschel Junior Championship and Future Masters, with 11 top-10 AJGA finishes.
Currently ranked 8th in the AJGA boys rankings, Howell entered final qualifying ranked No. 496 among amateurs. Now, he’s headed to Oakmont Country Club to compete in the U.S. Open from June 12–15.
