Florida State’s Luke Clanton posted another 66 to extend his individual lead, and give FSU a 14-shot advantage

Luke Clanton is ranked No 1 in the AmateurGolf.com World Rankings, and by a lot. Today he posted his second-straight 66 to pace Florida State to a 14-shot lead over Ole Miss, at their home course, Seminole Legacy G.C.

Sure, there is a home course advantage. But even so, Clanton and the rest of his teammates are performing at peak levels, and that bodes well for their chances in California later this month when the championships are played at the La Costa Resort.

ROUND 1 COVERAGE

On a course he knows better than anyone, Luke Clanton opened his NCAA postseason with precision, patience, and poise. The Florida State sophomore carded a flawless 6-under 66 at Seminole Legacy Golf Club on Monday to grab the solo lead at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, spearheading the Seminoles to a blistering 14-under team total in Round 1.

Clanton, currently ranked No. 5 in the PGA Tour University standings, looked every bit the seasoned contender as he worked his way through the challenging layout with six birdies and no bogeys. His round was highlighted by a red-hot stretch from holes 13 to 15, where he birdied two of three to separate from a tightly packed leaderboard.

Behind him, Jacob Modleski (Notre Dame) and Buck Brumlow (Georgia) sit one shot back at 5-under. Both players put together impressive rounds—Brumlow's including four front-nine birdies and Modleski showing off his putting prowess with a birdie at the difficult 18th to close out a 67.

Florida State’s dominance didn’t stop with Clanton. Tyler Weaver (-4) and Gray Albright (-2) helped build one of the most complete team rounds across all six regional sites. With the top five teams from each regional advancing to the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, the Seminoles have already opened a strong path forward.

The performance comes as no surprise to those who’ve followed Clanton’s season. Already qualified for the PGA Tour through University exemptions, he’s playing pressure-free golf—but with the precision of a seasoned pro. His short game was clinical, and his course management ensured he never had to scramble.

What’s Next

The regional format only intensifies from here. With 36 holes remaining, Florida State will look to widen the gap while teams like Notre Dame, Ole Miss, New Mexico, and Augusta scramble to solidify their place above the cutline. Clanton, meanwhile, has the inside track not only on medalist honors, but the momentum he needs heading into what could be a career-defining postseason.
