Georgia Tech's Hiroshi Tai leads amateurs at the Masters after round one

The 2024 NCAA Division I individual national champion made a birdie on the last hole to get in the clubhouse at 1-over and T37

Hiroshi Tai of Georgia Tech leads the five amateurs after the opening round of the 2025 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

Tai finished with a round of 1-over 73 and is T37 heading into Friday's round. He recorded two birdies, one bogey, and a double bogey. The double bogey came on the par-5 No. 13 after his third shot found the water, and he was forced to take a penalty.

According to DataGolf, there is a 19 percent chance the cutline will be 2-over, a 40 percent chance the cutline will be 3-over, and a 30 percent chance the cutline will be 4-over.

U.S. Amateur champion Jose Luis Ballester and 2025 Latin America Amateur champion Justin Hastings are 4-over and T73. 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Evan Beck is 5-over and T81, and the 2024 U.S. Amateur runner-up Noah Kent is 7-over and T90.

Ballester made the news on Thursday with his decision to relieve himself in Rae's Creek.
