Alexis Lamadrid overcame a two-shot deficit in the final round to beat María José Barragán for the title in a playoff

16-year-old Alexis Lamadrid from Phoenix, Arizona, has started 2025 in style with a thrilling win at the Mexican Women’s Amateur Championship. The tournament, held at Yucatan Country Club, ended with a dramatic playoff where Alexis outlasted María José Barragán to claim the title.

Alexis entered the final round trailing Barragán, a sophomore at Brigham Young University, by two strokes. She shot a steady 75 while Barragán carded a 77, leaving them tied at 8-over-par after 72 holes. The playoff stretched to two intense holes before Alexis finally secured the victory.

Last June, she made waves with back-to-back wins, first at the Underrated Golf Tour event supported by Stephen Curry at Old Barnwell, then at the AJGA Huntsville Junior. With this latest win, she’s shown she’s ready to take on even bigger challenges.

Winning the Mexican Women’s Amateur Championship comes with some major perks. Alexis earned an exemption into the 125th U.S. Women’s Amateur, which is scheduled in August at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. She also received the Lorena Ochoa Trophy for being the top Mexican competitor.

María José Barragán finished runner-up at 8-over par, following her playoff loss with rounds of 73-73-73-77.

Three players tied for third at 12-over-par: Miren Ontantón, Cory Lopez from Arkansas University, and Ana María Jiménez from Tampa University.
