Clark added, "I have been playing pretty well. All I was trying to do was bogey avoidance, and I did that pretty well."
On the difficult par-4 No. 18, Clark tee'd a driver low to the ground and punched one down the fairway, hit the green, and two-putted to maintain his one-shot lead. His short game and wedge control have been the staples of his good play.
Clark is taking a gap year from South Mountain Community College, where he played golf after Lee Williams High School
"It has definitely been a lot different from Arizona golf, but I have learned it quickly, and I like it out here," Clark said.
Mitchell Hoey of Moraga, Calif., is in solo second place at 2-under, and Hudson Ross of Austin, Tex., and Jack Winkler of Prairie Village, Kan. are T3 at 1-under. Alexander Elia of Coronado, Calif., is in solo fifth place at even par to round out the top five.
In the Senior Division, Brian Smyth of North Tustin, Calif., tops the leaderboard after an impressive round of 3-under 69. Smyth recorded five birdies and two bogeys in the round. He started 2-over but caught fire and made birdies on holes No. 9, 10, 12, 13, and 14 to get to 3-under.
Jason Pridmore of Ventura, Calif., and Rob Campbell of Camarillo, Calif., are T2 at even par with 18 holes remaining.
