Austin Peay Intercollegiate: Hosts take victory
HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 21, 2008) – Junior Erik Barnes ran away from the field with a final-round 67 to pick up medalist honors and lead Austin Peay State University men’s golf team to its first victory this season at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, Tuesday, at the par-72, 6,841-yard Links at Novadell.
Austin Peay won the tournament by nine strokes after firing a 32-under par 832, the third lowest 54-hole total in school history. The Govs finished with nine individual rounds of par or better during the tournament, including seven rounds in the 60s. Missouri finished second with a 23-under par 841. Belmont was a distant third with a four-under par 860.
Barnes won the tournament by six shots, his 199 (66-66-67) the first sub-200 score by a Governors player in school history. He recorded par or better on 46 consecutive holes before a bogey on his 11th hole in the third round. Barnes finished the tournament with 19 birdies and two bogies.
Missouri’s Peter Malnati, the nation’s 45th-ranked player entering the tournament, finished second with a 205 (68-67-70). William Harrold, his teammate, finished third with a 207 (69-68-70). Austin Peay sophomore Brian Balthrop (70-66-73–209) finished fourth while sophomore teammate Luke Sherrod finished in a fifth-place tie after finishing with a 211 (75-67-69).
Freshman Carlos Rodriguez finished 11th with a 214 (68-74-72) while senior Matt Coles finished 52nd with a 225 (77-73-75) three-round total. The Govs three players competing as individuals also fared well. Junior transfer Eric Anfinson finished 27th with a 219 (72-73-74), sophomore Jamie Neilson (74-76-73) and freshman Drew Miller (73-76-74) each were 43rd with 223s.
