Estorga and Istnick led after 36 holes last year as well, and will look to that experience to close the door this time around
Anthony Estorga and Jake Istnick of Dallas lead after the second round of the 49th Texas Four-Ball, shooting a 10-under 62 to secure a three-stroke advantage heading into the final round. Their 36-hole total stands at 16-under 128.
Starting on No. 10, Estorga and Istnick recorded five birdies before the turn. On the front nine of Braeburn Country Club, they added an eagle on No. 4 and three more birdies to complete a strong round.
“We had a good feel for the course from yesterday,” Istnick told the Texas Golf Association. “We were more aggressive with our tee shots and made the most of our chances.”
This marks the second consecutive year Estorga and Istnick have led after 36 holes. Last year, they carried a four-stroke lead into the final round at Pinecrest Country Club.
“Our strategy is to make as many birdies as possible,” Estorga said. “We’ll build on last year’s experience and try to keep our momentum.”
Defending champions Rory Smith and Aaron Hickman of Tyler, along with first-round leaders Dylan Everett and Cole Moreland of Austin, are tied for second. Smith and Hickman, who will be paired with Estorga and Istnick, are aiming to repeat their victory from last year.
Toby Zeringue of Katy and Boomer White of Houston, along with Bill and Travis Skorheim of Spring, are tied for fourth. Zeringue and White shot a 7-under 65 to move up the leaderboard.
In the Senior Division, Trevor Hyde and Trey Tyner of Kerrville lead after an 8-under 64. The pair, with strong chemistry, capitalized on their teamwork in Round two.
Mike Peck and Steve Love of Irving, Mike Lohner of Southlake, and Todd Vancil of Westlake are tied for second with a 9-under 135.
In the Super Senior Division, John Grace of Fort Worth and Bill Holstead of Wichita Falls are tied with Doug Harker of Austin and Bill Houghton of Plano after a 36-hole score of 4-under 140.
