Kuehn has now never advanced past the round of 16 in the U.S. Women's Am and another favorite falls in the round of 32

The first match of the day at the 2024 U.S. Women's Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., was a battle of powerhouses, with the No. 1 seed Maria Jose Marin advancing.

Starting at 7:15 a.m., the stroke-play medalist Jose Marin defeated No. 32 Rachel Kuehn 4 and 3, taking down the recent Wake Forest graduate and recent low amateur at the Evian Championship.

Kuehn is currently ranked No. 1 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com Women's Rankings but has never advanced past the round of 16 in five U.S. Women's Amateur appearances.

Marin went 2-up through the first three holes and never looked back, leading the entirety of the match. She won holes No. 14 and 15 to end the match and advance to the round of 16.

Kuehn made the final 16 in 2020 and 2022, made the round of 32 in 2023, and earned medalist honors in 2021 but lost in the round of 64.

No. 2 seed Melanie Green fell to Rocio Tejeda 1-up, while No. 3 seed Zoe Campos lost in the round of 64. Green was 1-up through 16 holes, but Tejeda won holes No. 17 and 18 to complete the comeback and upset.

No. 4 seed Lauren Kim, No. 5 seed Asterisk Talley, No. 6 seed Rianne Malixi, No. 7 seed Farah O'Keefe, and No. 9 seed Anna Davis all advanced to the round of 16.
