Sutherland and Parker Paxton continued their friendly rivalry at the Wyoming Amateur Championship

If you play amateur golf in Wyoming, you're well aware of Parker Paxton's dominance. Just ask Taj Sutherland, who lost to Paxton in the finals of the 2024 Wyoming State Match Play Championship a couple of weeks ago. In 2023, as the defending match play champion, Sutherland faced a similar fate with another loss to Paxton.

Today, however, it was Sutherland who emerged victorious. Entering the final round of the 2024 Wyoming Men’s Amateur trailing Paxton by one stroke, it certainly felt like match play for the two competitors. Tied for the lead going into the 54th and final hole at Purple Sage Golf Course, the par-5 18th, Sutherland got his revenge with a clutch birdie to move to 7-under, one stroke ahead of Paxton, who made par.

Sutherland, a redshirt senior at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), is no stranger to success. He won the 2019 Wyoming 4A State Championship and the 2022 State Match Play Championship. In last year's State Amateur Championship, Sutherland finished 7th.

A victory against Parker Paxton is always hard-earned. Committed to play at Colorado, Paxton won four straight Wyoming 3A State Championships, including victories by 16 and 19 strokes during his sophomore and junior years. He entered this year's amateur championship as the defending champion, having won last year's title by 3 strokes.

With this victory, Sutherland earns an invite to the 2024 U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine National Golf Club to represent the state of Wyoming.
