Gordon Sargent is playing with two of the longest drivers on tour, and Ben James gets to play with a fellow Cavalier
The 16 amateurs that are teeing it up this week in the 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 have their tee times and pairings for the first two days. There are two players who previously earned exemptions into the championship that are not being used.
Christo Lamprecht, who won the 2023 British Amateur, gave up his exemption to turn pro after the collegiate season finished and missed out on qualifying in final qualifying. Nick Dunlap, the 2023 U.S. Amateur champion, is in the field as a pro after winning the 2023 American Express.
Here are three notable pairings:
Hole No. 10 1:47 PM: Gordon Sargent (a), Jake Knapp, Cameron Young
The 2023 U.S. Open low amateur and No. 1 ranked player in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings with play with two of the longer drivers on tour, making for a fun pairing for the young Vanderbilt standout. Sargent finished T39 and 4-over last year at Los Angeles Country Club.
Hole No. 10 2:09 PM: Ben Kohles, Denny McCarthy, Benjamin James (a)
Ben James, a 2023 Walker Cupper and quarterfinalist at the 2023 U.S. Amateur will get to play with PGA Tour winner and Virginia alumni Denny McCarthy. James just finished his sophomore season at Virginia and will have a comfortable pairing with a proven professional from his stomping grounds.
Hole No. 1 2:31 PM: Taisei Shimuzu, Gunnar Broin (a), Maxwell Moldovan
The Kansas product Broin will play with recently turned pro Maxwell Moldovan, who is playing in his third straight U.S. Open after getting in last year as the first alternate, same as this year. Moldovan has played at Ohio State for the last four years and made the cut last season at Los Angeles Country Club.
