For the second straight season, Preston Summerhays and Arizona State won the Thunderbird Invitational at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.

Arizona actually held the first-round lead after a 13-under 271 to open the tournament, but a second-round 3-over 287 took them out of the tournament.

Preston Summerhays won the individual title, finishing 12-under and winning by two shots. He carded rounds of 67-66-68. His final round, 3-under 68, consisted of six birdies, a bogey, and a double bogey. After he made a double bogey on No. 10, he fell to 8-under and 1-over for the tournament.

However, from there, he made birdies on holes No. 12, 14, 15, and 16 to get to 12-under and win the tournament with that birdie run on the back nine.

With the win, Summerhays moved up from No. 13 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings to No. 9 and back in the top ten.

His teammate at Arizona State, Ryggs Johnston, finished in solo second place at 10-under after shooting a final-round 5-under 66. Pablo Ereno of UCLA and Wenyi Ding of Arizona State finished T3 at 9-under.

Bastien Amat of New Mexico and Michael Mjaaseth of Arizona State finished T5 at 8-under.
