Marrion and Rudisill both shot 3-under 69, while team Brown and team Paschal lead the team competition through 18 holes
Trey Marrion of Chesapeake, Va., and Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte, N.C., lead their respective divisions after the opening round of the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championships at TPC Myrtle Beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Team Brown and Team Paschal, captained by Blades Brown and Ethan Paschal, lead the team competition at 5-over.
Marrion shot a first-round 3-under 69 to lead the field by one shot through 18 holes. The Illinois commit recorded four birdies on Holes No. 2, 5, 7, and 18. Marrion recorded just one bogey, coming on the par-4 No. 16.
It is a crowded leadboard, with Logan Reilly of Lovettsville, Va., Mason Howell of Thomasville, Ga., and Clark Van Gaalen of Turlock, Calif., are all T2 at 2-under. Reilly recorded four birdies and two bogeys, Howell recorded two birdies, two bogeys and an eagle and Van Gaalen recorded six birdies and four bogeys.
Chase Kyes of Birmingham, Ala., Matt Moloney of Charleston, S.C., Jackson Herrington of Dickson, Tenn., Bowen Mauss of Draper, Ut., and Coltran Mittag of Ashland, Neb., are all T5 at 1-under.
Marrion is ranked No. 13 in the Class of 2024 by Golfweek. He finished in the top 25 in six AJGA events last year, and finished runner-up at the UHY Baltimore Junior and finishing T9 at the Jones Cup Junior Invitational, finishing 2-over.
Marrion also won the 2022 Donald Ross Junior Championship title. Marrion finished T14 at the 2022 Eastern Amateur.
GIRLS DIVISION
Like Marrion, Elizabeth Rudisill holds a one-shot lead over the field after a first-round 3-under 69.
Vanessa Borovilos of Canada is in solo second place at 2-under 70 after recording three birdies and one bogey. Alice Ziyi Zhao of Irvine, Calif., is in solo third place at 1-under and Mia Hammond of New Albany, Ohio is in solo fourth place at even par 72.
Amelie Zalsman of Saint Petersburg, Fla., Ryleigh Knaub of Debary, Fla., Mary Miller of Savannah, Ga., and Madison Messimer of Myrtle Beach, S.C. are T5 at 1-over.
TEAM COMPETITION
In the team competition, team Brown and team Paschal are in first place at 5-over. Blades Brown captains Team Brown, and the team consists of Jackson Herrington, Kayla Bryant, Aarav Shah, and Annika Kohoutek.
Ethan Paschal captains Team Paschal, and the team consists of Logan Reilly, Jenna Kim, Grant Roscich, and Joline Truong.
Team Zhao and Team Culbreth are T3 at 7-over and team Dunham is in solo fifth place at 8-over.
In the team competition, team captains selected their team of fellow competitors. The team aspect began in 2023, allowing for a camaraderie among players and prepare for their future college scoring format. Each team consists of 3 boys and 2 girls in a 5 count 4 format.
