The star UCLA freshman edged the 2023 U.S. Amateur winner Nick Dunlap by one shot after a final round 4-under 68.
UCLA Freshman Luke Powell shot 17-under to pull off an impressive one-shot victory at the Hamptons Intercollegiate at Maidstone Golf Club in East Hamptons, N.Y.
Powell's remarkable performance at the Hamptons Intercollegiate saw him finish with rounds of 64-67-68, making his 17-under the second-lowest 54-hole score in relation to par in the program's history.
His total score of 199 is equally noteworthy, tying for the third-lowest 54-hole score in program history alongside Duffy Waldorf's 14-under 199 achieved at the 1985 Stanford Intercollegiate.
Powell's score is particularly remarkable as it marks the lowest by a Bruin in 11 years since Pontus Widegren's 18-under 198 at the 2012 Cal State San Marcos Fall Invitational.
Powell opened the competition with an 8-under 64. That mark is tied for the seventh-lowest 18-hole score in program history and is tied with Patrick Cantlay, Jonathan Garrick, and Steve Conway for the lowest 18-hole score by a UCLA freshman.
Noteworthy as well is Nick Dunlap's impressive second-round score of 60, a feat that was only narrowly prevented from being a historic 59 due to a lip out. He held a two-stroke lead after 36 holes, with rounds of 69 and 60. The 60 matched the single-round NCAA record and set an Alabama school record.
