Mathews shot a 4-under 67 to sit in solo first place after the opening 18 holes.
After one round at the Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich., South Carolina and NC State's Nick Mathews are out in front.
South Carolina leads Indiana, Arizona, and Memphis heading into the second round.

Esteban Vazquez of Memphis, Noah Gillard of Indiana, and Cecil Belisle of Kansas are all tied for second place at 3-under.
Tiger Christensen of Arizona, Nicholas Quintero of Oregon State, Zach Adams of South Carolina, and Angelo Marcon of Notre Dame are all T5 at 2-under.
