Berthelot blitzed the rest of the field, winning by ten shots and controlling the tournament throughout.

It was a historic day at Oakbourne Country Club. Greg Berthelot of Baton Rouge once again dominated the Louisiana Mid-Amateur Championship, winning by ten strokes over runner-up Chuck Spears of Alexandria.

Berthelot fired rounds of 66-67-67 to finish the championship at 16-under par. Berthelot won wire-to-wire, and his impressive performance is the best in the 31-year history of this championship.

He shot 32-35 on Sunday for the final round 67. Berthelot eclipsed the all-time scoring record he set last year at Koasati Pines at Coushatta by two shots. Berthelot, known for his length off the tee, was an absolute machine on the par 5s this weekend.

Over the course of 54 holes, he played the par 5s at Oakbourne Country Club in fourteen-under par. He made two eagles and a birdie on hole No. 3, two birdies and an eagle on No. 7, three birdies on hole No. 11, and on No. 13, he made one par and two birdies.

Berthelot is the first Mid-Amateur to successfully defend the title since Patrick Christovich did it a decade ago.

Other than Berthelot and Chuck Spears, only three other players finished under par for the championship, tying for third place at three-under par: 2018 Champion Hank Shaheen of Dequincy (73-73-67), Jeremy Gautreaux of Prairieville (68-73-72) and Todd McPherson of New Orleans (69-73-71).

Oakbourne Country Club played to a par 72 at approximately 6,900 yards on Friday. Superintendent Jason Barras and his crew have the course in superb condition, and it drew rave reviews from this field of the best amateur golfers in Louisiana ages 21 and over.

The number one most difficult ranked hole for this championship was the dogleg right par 4 18th (449 yards).

The top 20 finishers and ties earned prize money. The top 30 finishers and ties earned an exemption into the 2024 Louisiana Mid-Amateur Championship, scheduled for August 9-11 at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant.
