LIVE SCORING: NCAA Men's Regionals tee off on Monday

The top of college golf always breeds a new level of intensity each and every year – and this year’s announcement of the 2023 NCAA Men’s Regionals only substantiates that.

81 teams in total advance to six regional sites, but the road to Grayhawk remains as cutthroat as ever: Only five teams from each region and six individuals total will advance to the 30-team National Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ.

Each regional will be conducted over three days and 54 holes of stroke play from May 15-17.

Perennial powerhouse Vanderbilt notched the No. 1 overall seed, while Arizona State, North Carolina, Texas Tech, Illinois, Texas Tech and Pepperdine claimed the No. 1 seeds. Only one of these number-one seeds – Illinois – won its team conference championship.

Here’s a look at the field for the 2023 Division I Men’s Golf Regionals.

Auburn Regional
Auburn University Club; Auburn, Ala.

The Teams:
1. Vanderbilt 2. Tennessee 3. Auburn 4. Colorado State 5. Ohio State 6. Washington 7. TCU 8. Chattanooga (Southern) 9. Houston 10. Marquette 11. Indiana 12. Augusta (Southland) 13. Siena (MAAC)

The Individuals:
Alex Goff (Kentucky), Brantley Scott (Troy), Erik Jansson (Jacksonville State), Cameron Clarke (Southern Miss), Brian Ma (Harvard), Jackson Skeen (Tennessee Tech), Luka Naglic (Arkansaw State), Huge Thyr (South Alabama), Killian McGinley (Fairfield)

The Breakdown:
Vanderbilt atop a strong regional isn’t any level of surprising. Though they fell to Florida in the SEC Championship, a six-win season should make Regionals a cinch. Tennessee is led by exceptionally talented freshman Caleb Surratt, who won the individual conference championship title. Auburn failed to advance to match play at the conference championship, but has seen a lot of consistency in its past year and should advance easily with home course advantage. Chattanooga, whose head coach Blaine Woodruff endured personal tragedy toward the end of the team’s season, won two events in a row and runner-up in their conference championship to land the No. 8 seed.

Salem Regional
The Cliffs at Keowee Falls; Salem, S.C.

The Teams:
1. North Carolina 2. Georgia Tech 3. Texas A&M 4. San Diego State 5. Georgia Southern 6. Arkansas 7. Purdue 8. New Mexico 9. Clemson 10. Furman (Southern) 11. Middle Tennessee (Conference USA) 12. Northern Illinois (Mid-American) 13. Long Island (Northeast) 14. Longwood (Big South)

The Individuals:
Kieron van Wyk (Charleston), Luis Carrera (UCF), Johnny Travale (UCF), Seth Taylor (Coastal Carolina), Bryce Corbett (Radford)

The Breakdown:
The big 3 in Austin Greaser, David Ford, and Dylan Menante have led North Carolina to a banner year, but failure to make conference match play raises a few concerns. Georgia Tech was a quiet threat all year, but an incredibly strong schedule prepared them to take the ACC title. No. 3 seed Texas A&M is led by Masters low amateur Sam Bennett, who is eager to cap off his college career with an NCAA title after a 5-win season.

The Teams:
1. Illinois 2. Florida 3. Texas 4. Oregon 5. Kansas State 6. Georgia 7. Liberty 8. San Diego 9. Little Rock (OVC) 10. Michigan State 11.Wisconsin 12 Illinois State (MVC) 13. Purdue Fort Wayne (Horizon)

The Breakdown:
Illinois is right behind Vanderbilt as one of the most consistent teams all season, and a region they’re familiar with will only play in their favor. Hot off of a Big Ten Championship, Illinois is looking to make a huge run to Grayhawk. SEC Champions Florida have pulled together an incredible 5-win season led by No. 2 PGA TourU ranked Fred Biondi, who has won medalist honors twice – but their anchor may be in walk-on Matthew Kress, who went 3-0 in match play at SECs. Defending champion Texas, ranked No. 15 in the country, is without much of its championship-winning team and seeks to make another run.

Arizona State’s new identity will be put to test in a regional close to home – four out of the five players who helped make their run at Grayhawk last year have departed, but the team has survived a tough schedule. Pac-12 champions Stanford are led by Michael Thorbjornsen, who is a frontrunner for the Haskins award – as well as locking up his PGA Tour card. No. 7 seed Cincinnati will make its first-ever Regionals appearance.

The Breakdown:
As the best amateur in the world, Ludvig Aberg knows nothing but No. 1 – and Texas Tech is right there beside him. Though a team conference championship eluded them, Aberg broke a Big 12 scoring record in claiming the individual title – a 265 to finish 15-under. Regional host Oklahoma took care of the Big 12 team title, winning by 18 strokes and remaining high in the contender conversation. No. 3 Alabama looking to make a statement after barely missing the National Championship in a four-man playoff last year.

Morgan Hill Regional
The Institute Golf Club; Morgan Hill, Calif.

The Teams:
1. Pepperdine 2. Florida State 3. Mississippi State 4. Arizona 5. Louisville 6. Baylor 7. Missouri 8. Houston 9. Brigham Young Univ. (West Coast) 10. NC State 11. Charlotte (American) 12. Grand Canyon (Western Athletic Conf.) 13. Northern Colorado (Big Sky)

The Breakdown:
Pepperdine and Florida State follow up strong seasons with the top-two seeds, but Mississippi State and Arizona are a good distance away from them in this region. A local regional will be a big plus for Pepperdine and Arizona, while Florida State and Mississippi State may need to make some adjustments to stay in it. Big potential for a few under-the-radar teams to make a big-time push to lock up the last few seeds.
