Callaway brings more forgiveness and distance with the 2023 Big Bertha lineup

The new Callaway Big Bertha driver, fairways, hybrids, and irons stay true to an iconic name that resonates with amateur golfers.

The Big Bertha name is as trusted as any in the golf equipment business. First introduced as a driver in 1991, Ely Callaway took the immediate success of Big Bertha and eventually applied it to irons in 1994. Since that time, Big Bertha has had many generations that have adapted to modern technology to make the average golfer the best he/she can be.

Callaway made the announcement that the Big Bertha family will continue to grow in 2023 with a release of new equipment aimed at helping mid to high handicap players with all of the most important areas of their games. Loft, forgiveness, and distance. The new Big Bertha lineup will feature a driver, fairway woods, hybrids, and irons with flexibility in mind for the golf consumer.

“This lineup is all about game improvement and having fun,” said Callaway Vice President of R&D, Brian Williams. “This is a line where we look at each club top to bottom to give golfers confidence, to give them confidence at address, and to help them have fun with the shots they play. To get the ball up in the air, get the ball downrange, and enjoy the game.”

Let’s take a look at each part of the new Big Bertha family and what you can expect from technology and performance standpoints.

Big Bertha Driver
With a CG that’s positioned low and forward, the new Big Bertha driver is designed to reduce your slice and get the ball in the air with ease. Some extra weighting in the heel also helps promote a draw, however, you are able to fully adjust this driver at the hosel to finetune the ball flight you’d like to see. Of course, with any product that bear’s the Big Bertha name you can expect a big distance. The XL Face is A.I. generated to optimize speed and spin for incredible gains off of the tee. Callaway also improves on its Jailbreak Technology in this model with a lightweight construction that improves your ball speed.

The Big Bertha driver will be available in 9, 10.5, and 12-degree lofts and will retail for $499.99.

Big Bertha Fairway Woods
Continuing on the path of distance and forgiveness, the Big Bertha fairway woods are going to be a great compliment to the driver. They will be available in a 3W, 5W, 7W, 9W, and Callaway’s famous Heavenwood. At $299.99, the higher handicap player will be hard-pressed to find fairway woods easier to hit than this collection, which are all lightweight by design and incorporates Batwing Technology, which produces more face flex for more distance.

“We focused on making the easiest launch fairway wood in the game,” said Williams. “This is avery, very repeatable, controllable, easy to launch fairway wood. It’s deep, it’s forgiveness,and that really shallow face helps you get under the ball with really high launch and a good result.”

Big Bertha Hybrids
The Big Bertha hybrids offer a ton of versatility to the player looking to properly gap and blend the top of their golf bag. Available from 3H to 9H, you can swap out as far as mid-irons in your set to create your ideal distances. Tungsten weighting is precisely placed in each model to provide the loft and forgiveness needed when hitting these clubs into greens. The first thing you’ll notice is that the hybrid heads are fairly large, which inspire a lot of confidence when you have a longer approach shot. They also incorporate the same Jailbreak and Batwing technology pieces that the Big Bertha driver and fairway woods have, so they feel incredibly similar to one another. Not an easy feat to accomplish from a manufacturer’s standpoint.

“The mission here is to create that complimentary offering for players, and really give them flexibility on how they put their set together,” said Williams. “With different options that all promote confidence, these hybrids are easy to launch, they’re easy to hit, and they’ll go far.”

The Big Bertha hybrids will retail for $259.99 each.

Big Bertha Irons
If you’ve been a fan of Big Bertha irons in previous generations, you’re going to fall in love with the new 2023 version. Callaway has done a great job of making a confidence-inspiring iron that doesn’t look like a huge chunk of metal behind the ball. A big part of that is the Black Smoke finish which is sleek and eye-catching. With a good amount of offset, these irons are very forgiving and really help fight your slice. The components are all lightweight, so if you’re a senior or someone who prefers a lighter iron these should be in your wheelhouse.

“We hope this is seen as a very balanced iron – premium cosmetics, it looks beautiful there’s visible tech, and then a shape that inspires confidence,” said Williams. “This is a very traditional Callaway shape. We have offset to help this player, the topline thickness, sole widths, and longer blade length. It’s an iron that’s forgiving and is going to be good on launching the ball high.”

The Big Bertha irons will be available as a 4-PW set and will retail for $999.99 (steel) and $1099.99 (graphite).
