Texans John Hunter and Mark Lindberg prevail at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga.
Don’t mess with Texas!
Texans John Hunter (The Woodlands, TX) and Mark Lindberg (Irving, TX) won the mid-amateur and senior divisions of the Berkeley Cup, held at the Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga.
Hunter had opened the event with a 66 and never gave up the lead. Beginning the day with a one-shot lead over Brad Harden, Hunter increased his lead to three after Harden made a double bogey 6 on No. 6 and from there the title chase was never in doubt.
Hunter made four birdies and an eagle over his last 10 holes to shoot a 68 which left him at 10-under for the event, good for a seven-shot victory. Daniel Keddie (Charleston, SC), who played collegiately at Tennessee, tied Hunter for the low round of the day and moved into solo second place. Berkeley Hills member Taylor Smith fired a final round 69 to tie for third with Chester VandenBerg (Portage, MI) and Harden.
In the senior division, Lindberg entered the day with a three-shot lead over John Olsen (Mooresville, NC) and both players matched 75s on the day. After four holes, Olsen cut the lead down to one but a double bogey six on the tricky fifth hole followed by a bogey on the sixth gave Lindberg a four-shot lead.
Olsen played even par golf over the last 12 holes but Lindberg wouldn’t make any mistakes to let him back into the tournament.
