Qualifying is complete at 68 sites across the United States; see who made it to Erin Hills Golf Club in Wisconsin

Qualifying is complete for the 41st U.S. Mid-Amateur, contested over 18 holes at 68 sites across the United States.

A record 5,708 entries were accepted for the championship, to be held at Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, Wisconsin. 41 players, including the defending champion Stewart Hagestad, are exempt into the championship, with the remainder of the 264-player field coming from sectional qualifying.

August 24

The 68th and final qualifying site for the 2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur took place at Walpole Country Club outside Boston, Mass. Former Duke standout Jake Shuman, a recently-reinstated amateur, was one of two co-medalists after shooting 2-under 69.

"Growing up, the Mid-Amateur has been the forbidden fruit," Shuman told MassGolf. "Everybody there can play. I’m sure there’s a handful of guys in similar spot — returning amateurs. The level is incredibly high. A lot of it is how much practice I can get in. If I can play my best golf, I can compete with most people."

Also firing 69 was Maxwell Campion, who made three straight birdies from 14 to 16 to reach 4 under. He needed them greatly as a double-bogey 6 at the par-4 18th could have otherwise erased his chance at a trip to Erin Hills.

August 23

Scott Shingler is a U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying medalist for the third time since 2017 after posting 71 at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort's Mystic Rock course. Earning co-medalist honors beside Shingler was Jimmy Ellis, who also medaled at U.S. Amateur qualifying earlier this year.

A back-nine 33, including birdies in his closing two holes, has sent Jack Schultz to his second USGA championship of the summer. After qualifying for the U.S. Amateur last month, Schultz finished atop the leaderboard this time after posting a 67 at The Legend at Merrill Hills in Waukesha, Wisc., to edge Nathan Colson by a stroke.

Chris Kamin made clutch birdies on the 16th and 18th holes at Alta Mesa Golf Club to claim his second USGA medalist honor of the year. His 5-under round of 67 earned him his fifth medal since 2017, which includes an impressive performance at U.S. Open locals in 2017.

Bouncing back from bogeys in two of his first three holes was Long Beach resident Torey Edwards, who climbed his way up the leaderboard at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. to medal by a stroke. Edwards also advanced through U.S. Open locals earlier this year, and captured the Long Beach Men's Amateur Championship.

Daniel Connolly made it look easy at the always-challenging Fountaingrove Golf & Athletic Club in Santa Rosa, Calif. He kept bogeys off his scorecard and scattered six birdies around the golf course to medal by three in his first attempt at a U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier.

For the second year in a row, Jamie Miller is headed to the U.S. Mid-Amateur after earning medalist honors in sectional qualifying. He made birdies down the stretch at 16 an 17 to avoid a large playoff at 2-under 69.

57-year old Jeff Frazier used course knowledge at his home club of Carlisle Country Club to card 66 and earn medalist honors by two shots. His bogey-free day sends him to his second U.S. Mid-Amateur since cresting the age of 50. He also qualified back in 2017 for the championship at Atlanta Athletic Club.

Preston Dembowiak had it 8 under with two to play at the Patriot Golf Club qualifier in Ninety Six, S.C. Thankfully the former Liberty golfer had built a large enough cushion that a double bogey on the par-3 17th was only a blip on his radar Thursday as he posted 66 to medal by a stroke.

A closing 31 at CommonGround Golf Course outside Denver, Colo. has sent Chris Thayer to Erin Hills for his third U.S. Mid-Amateur appearance since 2016. Thayer, who also medaled at qualifying in 2018, fired 64 thanks to an impressive front 9 after beginning his day on the back. Sam Marley, who also started his round on 10, did his damage early with a 4-under 30 on the back nine en route to his own 64 as the pair shared medalist honors by a stroke over Nick Nosewicz, who advanced with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

Lance Goodson's 66 at Montgomery Country Club in the state of Alabama's lone qualifier sealed a one-shot medalist victory. The Birmingham, Ala. resident got to 3 under on the front side of Montgomery C.C.'s par-70 layout before going 1 under the remainder of the day. His birdie on the short par-4 17th was the difference between sharing medalist with two others at 67 or claiming the title outright.

Former UNC Tar Heel Andy Sajevic is no stranger to capturing medalist titles at USGA qualifiers, nor is he to playing exceptional competitive golf at Shadow Ridge Country Club in his hometown of Omaha.

For the fifth time since 2016, Sajevic finished atop the leaderboard while advancing to a USGA championship, making it the second straight year he's done so for the U.S. Mid-Amateur. On Tuesday at Shadow Ridge, he took advantage of the par-5s by making birdie or better in all four opportunities, including two eagles. Sajevic has now won the Nebraska Amateur and qualified for three different USGA championships at Shadow Ridge.

Two recently reinstated amateurs named Matthew are headed to Erin Hills from the Crumpin-Fox Club qualifier. Matthew Cowgill and Matthew Naumec both fired 71 to share medalist honors.

"It’s very special, especially after waiting a year, and basically being out of competitive golf," Naumec told Mass Golf.

"Any chance to get to play in a USGA event, you’re doing everything you can, not to let it slip away. I am just glad I was able to hold onto this one." said Cowgill.

Two back-nine eagles surged Tim Dillon into sole possession of the medalist title at Mill Creek Golf Club in Mebane, N.C. His 68 finished a shot ahead of three 69s, two of which were successful in advancing to the championship proper via playoff.

Scott Lamb's hot start featuring two birdies was quickly erased with a double bogey on the par-4 3rd at Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, Ill. He brushed it off and went 1 under the remainder of the day to take medalist honors with the only under-par round of the qualifier.

A bogey-free day featuring six birdies has sent Weston Bell to Erin Hills after a 66 at Dataw Island Club's Cotton Dike course earned him medalist honors. Playoffs were not a factor at this South Carolina club as the three advancing qualifiers finished at least three shots ahead of the rest of the field.

Evan Cocke had it 5 under through 11 holes at The Cannon Club following birdies at 10 and 11. He was well on his way to medaling at the Lothian, Md. qualifier until he made triple bogey at the short par-4 12th. Resiliently, he finished the closing nine with three birdies to erase the triple and card 66 for a four-shot victory and a trip to Erin Hills.

The only three players in red figures at Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, Ohio are headed to Erin Hills. Michael Castleforte led the charge with a 3-under 69, followed by former Ohio State Buckeye Max Rosenthal.

Former University of Akron golfer Ryan Gutowski is headed back to the U.S. Mid-Amateur for the second consecutive year, this time using a hole-out eagle on his final hole to earn medalist honors at Avon Oaks Country Club outside Cleveland, Ohio.

"The wind was in our face, and it was 93 yards," Gutowski told the Northern Ohio Golf Association. "I was contemplating between the 50 degree and the 54 degree. I went with the 50 (degree) and got the distance perfect so I couldn’t ask for much more."

His 2 on the par-4 9th put him a stroke ahead of Jack Garswood, who was one of two additional qualifiers at the Avon Oaks site.

While Joel Alexander and Mitchell Ford medaled at 4 under 68, it was Tulsa's Austin Schmidt winning a five-hole playoff over Zachary Campbell to secure the third and final qualifying spot at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas. The co-medalists finished a shot ahead of Schmidt and Campbell, with the advancing Schmidt closing with an eagle and two birdies in his last six to reach extra holes.

Robert Mitchell's 6-under 66 at Glen Eagle Golf Club in Syracuse, Utah featured no bogeys and a hole-out for eagle at the 450-yard par-4 4th. He medaled by a stroke over a group five players to fire 67 and feature in a 5-for-1 playoff, in which Yaroslav Merkulov was victorious to earn his spot at Erin Hills.

Brett Young already had his qualifying ticket in the bag as he teed off on the par-3 8th at Bridgeport Country Club. He was 7 under through 16 holes at the Bridgeport, W.V. qualifying site, plenty clear of the rest of the field. He put the cherry on top of a 63 with birdies at 8 and 9 to medal by five shots to tie Ohio's Bill Williamson for the lowest U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying score of this year.

Tyler Hitchner, who played collegiately for the University of Alabama, birdied three of his last four holes at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo. to jump up into sole possession of the medalist title with a 5-under round of 67. He edged a trio of 68s who just missed sharing honors with Hitchner, but are all still headed to Erin Hills.

"It really took not just good play, but good breaks," Hitchner told the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association. "On a normal day, I would say with the game I had, I’d shoot probably a 70, and I’d be going home, but some days you get the breaks, and that’s what it takes."

At Blue Bell Country Club, Alexander Kim overcame an opening double bogey on his first hole to go on to fire 3-under 67 and claim medalist honors. He closed with a birdie on the par-5 9th, just a few hundred yards from his childhood home.

"I lived on that hole for 15 years," Kim told the Golf Association of Philadelphia. "So I was like, alright, if the home hole was ever going to be nice to me, it should be nice to me now."

Former Harvard golfer Seiji Liu posted 67 at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas to qualifiy for his first USGA championship. His unlikely birdie at the nearly 500-yard par-4 7th helped put him a stroke ahead of the field before closing with pars at 8 and 9.

"I've got to thank the SNGA and the staff at Spanish Trail," Liu told Bill Bowman of Las Vegas Golf Insider. "They put on a great event and really treated us phenomenally."

A trio of co-medalists emerged from The Wilds Golf Club in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Rounds of 3-under 69 helped the group secure all three available spots and a trip to Erin Hills.

“I’m stoked [for Erin Hills],” Max Tylke told the Minnesota Golf Association. “They say you’re not supposed to look ahead, but that gave me more motivation than anything. I was excited to see that, and I really wanted to go."

It's Tylke's fourth USGA championship, second for Bryce Hanstad, and first for Robert Newbold.

“It means so much—I’m looking forward to the experience. When you get to this age, you never know if you’ll get to play in one of those,” Newbold told the Minnesota Golf Association. “That’s always been a goal, to make it to a USGA championship before the kids start getting older and life gets in the way."

David Combs and Michael Canfield advanced out of a four-for-two playoff at Geneva Golf & Country Club in Muscatine, Iowa after four players shot 3-under 68. The pair parred the first and second playoff holes to qualify for their first USGA championship.

"I haven’t played in a qualifier in a while," Combs told the Iowa Golf Association. "So early in the round, I had to put myself in the position to go get it."

In Oregon at Lake Oswego Country Club, brothers Jack and Chris Dukeminier were two of three medalists at 2-under 68, alongside Ray Richards who finished the day without a bogey on his scorecard. Jack earned his second USGA medalist title of the year following a 9-under performance at Arrowhead Golf Club back in July for U.S. Amateur qualifying.

Matthew Lowe medaled at a USGA qualifier for the second time this year, and fourth time in the last five years. The Farmingdale, N.Y. native went bogey-free with six birdies at Mohawk Golf Club to finish atop the leaderboard by four over a pair of qualifying 69s.

Kyle Downey of Fairport, N.Y., who also finished the day without a bogey, and Jared Mactas of Woodcliff, N.J. both shot 2-under 69 and will join Lowe at Erin Hills.

Former Canadian Tour player Creighton Honeck fired 65 at Comanche Trace to punch his ticket to Erin Hills. He birdied his final hole of the day, the par-5 9th, to finish one stroke ahead of Casey Carnes.

Down in Houston, five qualifiers advanced from the Pine Forest Country Club site, including co-medalists Shaun Helmle and Broc Haymon. With 4-under-par rounds of 68, the pair finished a shot clear of 12 other players in red figures. Haymon had it to 6 under with four holes to play but doubled six and bogeyed seven. He finished the day with a comforting birdie at the 9th to join Helmle at the top.

Jesse Rhymes, a special agent in the U.S. Army stationed in Wahiawa, Hawaii, went 6 under over his first 7 holes and cruised to a 7-under 64 and a 7-shot win to take the only qualifying spot at Ko Olina Golf Club in Kapolei, Hawaii.
