2022 U.S. Senior Amateur qualifying roundup
Qualifying for the 2022 U.S. Senior Amateur has completed at 51 sites across the United States.

The USGA accepted a record 2,865 entries for the 67th U.S. Senior Amateur, to be played Aug. 27 to Sept. 1, 2022 at The Kittansett Club in Marion, Mass. The tournament is open to any golfer 55 years or older (as of Aug. 27) and whose handicap does not exceed 7.4. The field will ultimately be comprised of 156 players.

Gull Lake Country Club, Richland, Mich.

A story of redemption unfolded at Harpeth Hills Golf Club in Nashville, where Pat Chisholm made a triple-bogey 7 on his opening hole. The native of Franklin, Tenn. would go 5 under the rest of the day, including a birdie at the 18th, to medal by a stroke and punch of two available tickets to Kittansett.

Most USGA qualifiers are 18 holes, with a few exceptions. But on Tuesday in Nampa, Id., Bruce Robinett and Bob Wheeler played 26. Eight extra holes were needed at Ridgecrest Golf Club before finally it was Robinett who emerged as medalist and solo qualifier from the site.

Gary Smith strung together six straight birdies to start his back nine en route to a 66 and a dominating medalist performance at The Woodcreek Club in Elgin, S.C. He finished the qualifier five shots ahead of a pair of even-par 71s.

After a lengthy weather delay at the annual host of The Dogwood Invitational, it was Savannah's Danny Nelson completing a bogey-free 67 at Druid Hills to medal by a stroke over a trio of 68s. No playoff was needed, as the group at 4 under rounded out the remaining three spots available to advance to Kittansett.

Super senior Bart Goodwin is headed to the U.S. Senior Amateur for the second consecutive year. Four birdies and a bogey at Lantana Golf Club outside Dallas, Texas secured a co-medalist performance alongside Terry Rice. The pair each shot 3-under 69 and finished atop the leaderboard by two shots.

While Oscar Mestre medaled at 1-under 71, five players gathered following regulation at Old York Road Country Club outside Philadelphia, Pa. for a playoff to determine the final four spots. Four holes were needed to name the fifth and final qualifier, with Peter Detemple knocking off Edward Kelly.

Making birdie on three of his last four holes at High Point Country Club was Ryan Fox, who quickly went from even par to 3 under to claim a share of medalist honors alongside Daniel Neveu. Neveu put together a bogey-free day to earn his second USGA medalist title in the last five years, having qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2017.

At Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio, Jeff Mallette and David Brown finished as co-medalists, finishing at 2-under par. “I made a few birdies and a double bogey and here I am,” Brown said. “Not much to say. I made some good putts today.”

Mallette shared similar sentiments to Brown and their rounds. “I made a bogey to start which isn’t so bad sometimes because it made me mad,” Mallette said. “I made a couple birdies and got a good break on 11 after missing the fairway and birding 10. Then I played par golf the rest of the way.”

Roger Hoit birdied his first hole of the day, his last hole of the day, and five more in between to shoot 69 (-3) and earn medalist honors at Charles River Country Club in Newton, Mass. The final two spots took five playoff holes to decide. Frank Vana Jr. got up-and-down for par on the fourth playoff hole to nab the second spot, while Don Foberg drained a 12-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole to advance to a USGA Championship for the first time in his career.

Wayne Fredrick and Buddy Allen shot 4-under 67s to share medalist honors at Bogey Hills Country Club in St. Louis, Mo. Both agreed that qualifying is often more stressful than the championship itself. “Past experience says, this is harder, proportionately than the actual tournament,” said Frederick, with Allen agreeing to say that “the hard part’s over.”

Last month Rylee Salome took the lone qualifying spot in the U.S. Girls' Junior Qualifier in New Mexico. This week, on the day Rylee was playing round one of the championship, her uncle Anton Salome took the lone qualifying spot in the U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier at Pained Dunes in El Paso, Texas. Like Rylee, Anton needed a playoff after he and Mike Lohner both shot 4-under 68, six shots better than anyone else.

In the end, Ortego won the playoff with Booker the first alternate.

ABOUT THE U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifying

The U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier is open to all competitors with an index of 5.4 or lower who will be at least 55 years of age at the start of the championship. The format is 18 holes of stroke play, with qualifying sites scattered across the country.
