Qualifying has wrapped up at 94 sites across the U.S., plus Canada and Mexico; see who has punched their ticket to Ridgewood

Qualifying for the 2022 U.S. Amateur is now complete at the 94 qualifying sites across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The USGA accepted 7,749 entries for the 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship, to be played Aug. 15-21, 2022 at Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club in Paramus, N.J. The U.S. Amateur champion receives a world of perks, from automatic selection to the U.S. Walker Cup team (if he is eligible) to an invitation to the Masters, U.S. Open, and Open Championship, to starts in a handful of other professional events. It's a life-changing win.

July 27

Wrapping things up at the 94th and final qualifying site was Radford University senior Patrick Gareiss, who posted back-to-back rounds of 66 at James River Country Club. He took medalist honors by a stroke thanks to a back-nine 31 in Wednesday's second round.

Alabama junior Thomas Ponder was one of just two players to post red figures in each of Monday and Tuesday's rounds at Seminole Legacy Golf Club. Rounds of 70 and 68 earned him medalist honors by three shots in Tallahassee.

Co-medalists Mark Stephens and Matthew Sutherland fired 12 under at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico, California. The pair of Northern California collegians finished three clear of alternates Tyler Ashman and Luke Dugger. Stephens, a junior at UC Davis from Redding, Calif., posted back-to-back 66s on Monday while Sutherland, a junior at Fresno State from Sacramento, Calif., carded 65 and 67 to climb into double digits under par.

Down in Southern California, Cal State Northridge junior Brandon McDonough shot 69-67 at The Oaks Club at Valencia to finish as medalist by three shots.

2020 Iowa Amateur champion Dennis Bull and his morning 65 at Davenport Country Club set the pace for a 6 under medalist performance in Davenport, Iowa. The 40-year-old mid-amateur from Norwalk, Iowa went bogey free during his first round and followed it up with 69 in the afternoon to stay one clear of Angelo Marcon.

Playing in the same group were qualifiers David Kim and R.J. Wren at Applebrook Golf Club in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Kim, who played collegiately for La Salle University, medaled with rounds of 66-70 while Wren, a former University of Delaware golfer, finished one back of Kim at 67-70.

"Watching him play well helped me out for sure," Kim told the Golf Association of Philadelphia. "We were just feeding off each other. He’s a good friend, so the vibes were right in the group today. It made it nice and relaxed. When he’s making putts, you’ve got to root for him. It’s cool to go [to the U.S. Amateur] with him."

Vanderbilt sophomore Jackson Van Paris finished atop the leaderboard at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C. to advance to Ridgewood. His afternoon 65 pushed him three ahead of second-place finisher Spencer Oxendine.

On the Cypress Course at Champions Golf Club, Baylor senior Johnny Keefer triple-bogeyed his second-to-last hole of the day but triumphantly birdied 18 to medal by a stroke. He went out in 31 to start his second round, which put him at 9 under through 27 holes.

There were three co-medalists at Chambersburg (Pa.) Country Club with 9-under totals: Ben Smith (transferring to Mount St. Mary's from Penn State), his good friend Patrick Sheehan (Penn State), and Michael Crowley (Loyola University).

“I was sitting there early in the second round and kind of just felt like I was out of it. I had 57 yards in on No. 8 and just flipped a wedge in and holed it. Even then, I didn’t really feel like I was in the mix yet,” said Sheehan. But four birdies in a row from 11-14 got him believing. It wasn’t until those four birdies that got me thinking like, “‘I could do this’.”

William O’Neill (Morristown, N.J.), Nicholas Gross (Downingtown, Pa.) and Rhett Sellers (Longview, Texas) advanced to the 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship, as the New Jersey State Golf Association hosted qualifying at Canoe Brook Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m super excited, expressed O’Neill. "Being from New Jersey and being able to play my first U.S. Am in New Jersey is awesome and I can’t wait for it."

Gross, 15, shot the second lowest score of the day, a 7-under-par 65, and followed that up with an even-par 72 in the afternoon.

Chase Sienkiewicz and Gavin Aurilia earned the two qualifying spots at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. The only player to shoot under 65 in both rounds, Sienkiewicz (Frisco, Texas / University of Arizona) cruised to the tournament’s low score by six shots at 15 under. Aurilia (Healdsburg, Calif. / University of Southern California) won a playoff for the second qualifying spot after shooting a second-round 65 to get to 9 under.

A large field gathered at Camden (S.C.) Country Club to play for five qualifying spots. How large? A cut was required after round one, and those shooting 2 over were out. Scoring was so low that players shooting 4-under 66 in the morning were not in the top 5. Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C. / UNC Greensboro) shot a 9-under 61 in the morning, then 70 in the afternoon to medal by one shot. William Jennings won a three-way playoff for the final spot

It was winner-take-all at Kings Country Club in Hanford, Calif. on Monday, with 33 players vying for one spot. Fresno State rising sophomore Jake Bettencourt shot an afternoon 66 to erase a four-shot deficit after round one, then birdied the fourth hole of a playoff to advance.

Scoring was tough at Rancho Santa Fe (Calif.) Country Club, as the low score was 3 over par for the two rounds. The USGA will be mailing out a couple of medals, as there were three co-medalists: former Barry University player Juan Yumar of Venezuela, mid-amateur Will Appleby, and USC's Krando Nishiba.

University of Colorado rising sophomore Dylan McDermott took the other spot at 5 under.

Ben Feld, Drexel University’s Head Golf Coach, has been waiting his entire amateur golf career to play in a USGA national championship. He’s been an alternate multiple times. He’s caddied in three U.S. Opens and two U.S. Amateurs.

But he'll be playing in the U.S. Amateur at Ridgewood after rounds of 71-64 (-5) gave him medalist honors at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.

“Honestly, it was starting to become a little bit of a thing. I started thinking, ‘Am I ever going to make one of these?’,” said Feld, 31, of Philadelphia, Pa. “I’ve been knocking on the door. I’ve been on the grounds for 12 or so [USGA championships]. So, this one today… it feels a little extra special.”

Alex Scott (Henderson, Nev.) almost missed the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Boulder Creek GC in Boulder City, Nevada.

“I had a tweaked muscle in my right arm and didn’t think I would be able to play,” he said to Bill Bowman of LasVegasGolfInsider.com. “But I decided to give it a shot and it all worked out.”

Worked out it did, with Scott shooting 11 under to earn medalist honors by one shot over Yuki Moriyama of Las Vegas. Scott, who works from home for Barclays, has found the motivation to dedicate himself to competitive golf this year.

“All of this makes me realize how much work you need to do to compete,” he said. “I wake up at 5 (a.m.) and go to Boulder City Muni and work on my game from 110 yards and in,” he said. “That’s where the money is made.”

At White Deer Run G.C. in Vernon Hills, Ill., Will Marshall, a rising senior at the University of Nebraska, went -7 and mid-amateur Charles Waddell, who won the Chicago District Amateur Championship two weeks ago, taking the other spot at 6 under.

Amid record-breaking heat at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., Anawin Pikulthong, Brock Goyen and Trevor Lewis prevailed from a field of 70 to punch their tickets to the 122nd U.S. Amateur. Pikulthong and Goyen posted the field's best round two scores to finish -10 and -9, respectively. Lewis made birdie on a playoff hole to earn the third and final qualifying spot.

“I struck it really well and drove it really well,” Pikulthong said to Brandon Genson of the Arizona Golf Association. “I hit a lot of fairways, which is pretty clear out here because you don’t want to go into those bushes and desert. I struck it well, gave myself some good birdie looks and a couple of them dropped.”

On a sweltering 36-hole day in the 100 degree heat, incoming Texas Tech freshman Matthew Comegys made four back-nine birdies during his afternoon round at Trinity Forest Golf Club outside Dallas, Texas to medal by a stroke.

Nathan Wang made nine morning birdies at Almaden Country Club in San Jose, Calif. to jumpstart his Monday. He carded 65 and followed it up with 69 to medal by three shots.

At Westchester Hills Golf Club in White Plains, N.Y., former Boston College golfer Christian Cavaliere made 11 birdies on the day and medaled handedly to advance to Ridgewood. His morning 63 set the pace for an eight-stroke victory.

Evan Vo made an astounding 13 birdies during his 36 holes at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, Texas as the Auburn sophomore from Austin, Texas medaled by a stroke.

On the island of Oahu in Hawaii, UCLA commit Luciano Conlan finished as the only player to post red figures in both rounds at Hoakalei Country Club. He medaled by seven shots with scores of 68 and 71.

2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Matt Parziale medaled by three shots at Winchester C.C. in Massachusetts, using a five-consecutive birdie run during the back nine of his second round to punch his ticket to Ridgewood.

Parziale putted it off the green on the final hole of his morning round, but rebounded with a 66 in the afternoon to post a 36-hole total of 140.

"I was pretty frustrated," Parziale told Mass Golf. "Nothing went my way in the morning and then I putt it off the green on 18. All the way down and thank God I hit a chip from 40 yards to two inches. If I don’t hit that chip there and I make double I think that’s a whole different mindset going into the afternoon. So that’s probably the shot that was most key part of the day was to just escape there with the bogey.”

It will be the Brockton, Mass. native's fifth trip to the U.S. Amateur.

The qualifier at Worthington Manor G.C. in Urbana, Md. saw an impressive medalist performance by Duke University commit Bryan Kim, who fired 65-67 to win by six shots.

Kim came out of the gate hot in the first round, birdieing three of the first four holes to start the day on Tuesday. Worthington Manor's qualifier was split into two days, with the first-day cut coming at 78.

At The Home Course in DuPont, Wash., AJ Ewart of Barry University and mid-amateur Andrew Von Lossow claimed co-medalist honors at the former U.S. Amateur host. Ewart made just one birdie in his opening round of 71 before the floodgates opened for him in the afternoon round, where he carded six birdies and an eagle en route to a 64. Von Lossow made a total of 13 birdies across both rounds.

At Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif., recently graduated high-schooler Dylan Oyama won the qualifier by eight shots and was the only player to finish 36 holes in red figures. The native of Carlsbad, Calif., who will attend San Diego State in the fall, posted a pair of 68s to advance to Ridgewood.

Jiri Zuska of the Czech Republic has been staying with a college teammate in Massachusetts this summer, and on Thursday he shot 10 under at Berkshire Hills in Pittsfield, Mass., to earn medalist honors and advance to his first (and last) U.S. Amateur.

“It’s actually very first and last time I can actually make it just because I’m going to turn pro next summer. but I’m just really excited that’s all I can really say,” said Zuska to Mass Golf.

Brandon Parker (Worcester, Mass.) qualified for the first time since 2010, before he turned pro after playing college golf at William & Mary.

“It’s awesome, it’s such a long day, we’ve been out here 10-plus hours, and it’s an unbelievable feeling,” said Parker to Mass Golf.

James Imai of Northwestern University took the other spot with an eagle on his final hole.

Charlie Bundy (Bethesda, Md.) didn't get off to a good start at Clustered Spires in Frederick Md., making double on the third hole to fall to 2 over par. But he went 10 under from there, shooting 68-64 to beat the field by four shots. Carson Bacha (York, Pa.) and Brad Whitaker (Kensington, Md.) also qualified.

Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt., University of Connecticut) shot rounds of 66-67 (-9) to beat the field by four shots at Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam, Connecticut. Nelson, who won the Hornblower Memorial earlier this month, was on the offensive all day.

“I didn’t really do anything that special,” said Nelson to the CSGA. “I played solid all day drove it well and hit a lot of greens to give myself a lot of looks at birdie.”

Taking the other qualifying spot was a veteran of many USGA championships, Bobby Leopold, who advanced in spectacular fashion by escaping a tough lie in a fairway bunker, then holing a chip for eagle to advance from a playoff.

“The U.S. Amateur is the pinnacle of all amateur events in the world so qualifying for the U.S. Amateur is really special,” said Leopold. “I’ve come close so many times [to qualifying in recent years] so it felt like it was my time to make it happen.”

Sam Storey of England shot 5-under 139 to earn medalist honors at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton, Minn.

“This is really cool—it’s as simple as that. I didn’t expect to go through, but luckily two rounds fell together nicely,” said Storey to the Minnesota Golf Association. “It’s quite a shock. My family back home is ecstatic and everyone around me is ecstatic.”

Defending Trans-Mississippi Amateur and Minnesota Amateur champion Derek Hitchner and University of Minnesota transfer Jacob Pedersen also qualified, surviving a three-way playoff after posting 4-under 140.

A pair of mid-amateurs, Bradley Sutherland and Brett Widner, took the two spots available at the Camargo Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
