33 sites set to conduct U.S. Senior Open Qualifying

Conducted over 18 holes, qualifying will be held at 33 sites across the United States between May 2 and June 1
Qualifying sites for the 42nd U.S. Senior Open Championship, to be conducted at Saucon Valley Country Club (Old Course), in Bethlehem, Pa., from June 23-26, have been announced by the USGA. Saucon Valley will become the first club to host the U.S. Senior Open three times, having previously been the venue in 1992 and 2000.
Conducted over 18 holes, qualifying will be held at 33 sites across the United States between May 2 and June 1. Online entry applications are available now and will continue through Wednesday, April 27, at 5 p.m. EDT.
“The USGA is thrilled to return to Saucon Valley Country Club and the Lehigh Valley, where the world’s finest senior players will compete for the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy,” said John Bodenhamer, chief championships officer for the USGA. “The qualifying process is valued greatly by the USGA and we thank Allied Golf Associations throughout the United States that provide thousands of golfers the opportunity to compete for a place in the championship field.”
Those players who are exempt from qualifying and have already filed entries include Pennsylvania native Jim Furyk, one of eight players who have won the U.S. Open (2003) and U.S. Senior Open (2021). Past U.S. Senior Open champions Fred Funk (2009), Bernhard Langer (2010), Roger Chapman (2012), Colin Montgomerie (2014) and Gene Sauers (2016) and past U.S. Open champions Ernie Els (1994, 1997), Retief Goosen (2001, 2004) and Michael Campbell (2005) have also entered.
One of the U.S. Senior Open qualifiers will be held at Waverley Country Club, in Portland, Ore., where three-time U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods won the 1993 U.S. Junior Amateur and two-time U.S. Women’s Open winner Juli Inkster claimed the 1981 U.S. Women’s Amateur. Waverley C.C. has hosted seven USGA championships overall, including the 1970 U.S. Amateur, won by Lanny Wadkins. The club, where 2004 U.S. Senior Open champion Peter Jacobsen learned the game as a youngster, is a Senior Open qualifying site for the 10th time since 1982.

The Omni Homestead Resort’s Cascades Course, in Hot Springs, Va., will host a qualifier for the 18th time in the last 21 years. The club is the site of eight USGA championships, including the 1967 U.S. Women’s Open and 1988 U.S. Amateur. Sam Snead, a four-time U.S. Open runner-up and World Golf Hall of Famer, was The Homestead’s golf professional for nearly six decades.
Wynlakes Golf and Country Club, in Montgomery, Ala., and Worthington Hills Country Club, in Columbus, Ohio, will each host Senior Open qualifying for the eighth time. Ted Tryba advanced to Omaha (Neb.) Country Club last year as an alternate from the Wynlakes qualifier and went on to tie for 34th.
Goose Creek Golf Club, in Jurupa Valley, Calif., and Indiana (Pa.) Country Club will be qualifying sites for the sixth and fifth times, respectively. Joey Sindelar, the runner-up to Fred Funk in the 2009 U.S. Senior Open, was one of two players to qualify at Indiana C.C. last year. He tied for 46th in Omaha.
Doylestown (Pa.) Country Club, located 30 miles southeast of Saucon Valley C.C., will host a U.S. Senior Open qualifier on May 19. The Bucks County course hosted the 2020 Philadelphia Open.
California has the most qualifying sites with five. Three U.S. Senior Open qualifiers are scheduled in Florida, while Pennsylvania and Texas will host two qualifiers. There are qualifying sites in 25 states.
Don Pooley (2002) is the lone player to win the U.S. Senior Open after advancing through qualifying. In 2021, 19 golfers who played in a qualifier made the 36-hole cut in the Senior Open at Omaha Country Club.
The 2022 U.S. Senior Open will be the 90th USGA championship contested in Pennsylvania. To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4 or be a professional, and be 50 years of age at the start of championship play.
The U.S. Senior Open was previously hosted by Saucon Valley in 1992 and 2000. Larry Laoretti posted scores of 67 and 68 over the final two rounds to defeat Jim Colbert by four strokes 30 years ago. In 2000, Hale Irwin became a five-time USGA champion and two-time Senior Open champion when he fired a final-round 65 to set the 72-hole scoring record of 267 (since eclipsed by Kenny Perry and Steve Stricker).
