Maridoe Golf Club will host the 2022 East West Matches
Nathaniel Crosby and
Kevin Marsh, a pair of USGA champions, will serve as the captains for the 2022 East West Matches at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
Nathaniel Crosby, who won the 1981 U.S. Amateur and served as the captain of two victorious Walker Cup Teams in 2019 and 2021, will lead the East Team against Kevin Marsh, the 2005 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, who will captain the West Team.
The dates of the 2022 competition are Nov. 4-6.
Marsh served as the assistant captain to
Jim Holtgrieve in the West’s 23-22 victory in 2020.
Marsh’s 10-and-9 victory in the championship match of the 2005 U.S. Mid-Amateur at The Honors Course in Tennessee is the still the largest margin of victory in the history of the competition. Marsh who played collegiately at Pepperdine, won the 1996 Southern California Amateur. He also served as interim coach for Pepperdine in its national championship year in 1997 when head coach
John Geiberger was not able to attend because of quarantine for the chicken pox.
Crosby, the son of legendary American entertainer Bing Crosby, won the 1981 U.S. Amateur at The Olympic Club and was the low amateur at the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. He also played on the winning USA Walker Cup team in 1983 in England and the gold-medal USA Team at the 1982 World Amateur Team Championships in Switzerland. Crosby is also a member of the sports Hall of Fame at the University of Miami, where he played collegiately.
“To have this duo of highly decorated players serve as our captains is a huge bonus for the East West Matches,” said lead organizer and founder
Scott Harvey
, who has two USGA titles to his credit. “Nathaniel and Kevin are well liked within the amateur golf community. Players will strive to be on their teams.”
“I’m just honored to be in the same room with Nathaniel,” said Marsh. “I met him at the 2006 Masters Amateur Dinner, and we became instant friends.
“I’m excited to see the West team come together over this next summer,” Marsh added. “The word has gotten out that the East West Matches is a ‘can’t-miss’ event and I’m sure many of the possible players are coordinating their playing schedules to make the team. I also know for certain that Scott (Harvey) and Nathaniel will be getting their guys fired up to beat us.”
“Kevin Marsh is an old friend of mine and we’ll have a great time,” Crosby said. “I’m really looking forward to it because I’ll still get to see many of the younger players. It will be a blast for me to stay in the survey mode. I hope to get to a few tournaments next year.”
Each of the captains heaped high praise on Maridoe Golf Club’s Albert Huddleston, who worked behind the scenes to make the first East West Matches happen during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are so fortunate to have Albert be so generous with Maridoe and be such an incredible host,” Marsh said.
“I’ve had almost a four-year stint of watching kids play at venues that I played so many years ago,” Crosby said. “Albert motivated me and it’s amazing how much he knows about all the players.”
The teams will be announced after the U.S. Mid-Amateur and U.S. Senior Amateur Championships in August and September of 2022, respectively.
Nine members of each team are decided on a points system, with the nine chosen by the tournament committee.
Each team consists of 18 players: six seniors, at least 10 mid-amateurs and up to two amateurs who have not yet reached the age of 25. In the three days of competitions, there are eight 18-hole four-ball matches on Day 1, eight 18-hole foursomes matches in the morning of Day 2 and eight 18-hole foursomes in the afternoon of Day 3 with 18 18-hole singles matches on Day 3.
Among all the competitors in the field in 2020, 12, collectively, have 20 USGA championships.
"The East West Matches couldn't have gone any better in its debut in the golfing world,” Harvey said. “We had all of the top amateur golfers in the country from every category - senior, mid-am, and collegiate. Maridoe Golf Club is a first-class venue and that proved to be a perfect golf course to challenge the country’s best golfers at all levels. The matches also provided some intense drama for all involved as it all came down to the 18th green on the last day, in the last match, with the West team prevailing by just one point thanks to an incredible up and down by
Patrick Christovich. We hope to build on all of this terrific momentum in the years ahead to continue to provide an atmosphere of fierce competition while also providing a platform for people to connect and build friendships that will last a lifetime."
