Qualifying has been completed at 51 sites across the country; see who has made it to the Country Club of Birmingham

Qualifying has been completed for the 7th U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, to be played May 14-18, 2022 at the Country Club of Birmingham (Ala.). A total of 51 sites across the country hosted local qualifiers, which ran from August 18 through December 13.

Highlights from qualifying include:

December 13

The team of Payne Denman and Brett Patterson earned medalist honors at the Country Club of Ocala (Fla.) with a 6-under 66, thanks to a birdie by Denman on the par-4 17th hole. They will be joined in Birmingham by the duo of Matt McLaughlin and Christian Vozza, who shot a 5-under 67 and then advanced in a 2-for-1 playoff.

December 7

Torey Edwards, the 2020 Southern California Golf Association's Player of the Year, and Bret Parker teamed up to take the lone qualifier's spot at The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Club, shooting a 6-under 65.

December 6

The Las Vegas duo of Kenny Ebalo and Shane Sigsbee took medalist honors with a 63 at Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, the site of the 2015 U.S. Senior Open. They will be joined in Birmingham by Michael Cliff and Kevin Huff, who finished one back with a 64.

December 2

Medalists Francis Catalano, a freshman at UC San Diego, and Ramie Sprinkling, the 2014 SCGA Mid-Amateur champion, shot an 11-under 61 at Rams Hill Golf Club in Borrego Springs, Calif. They will be joined in Birmingham by the duo of Paul Beckler and Tim Tiel, who shot a 9-under 63 and survived a 3-for-1 playoff to earn a trip to Birmingham.

NCGA Amateur Stroke Play and former San Francisco City Amateur champion Daniel Connolly teamed with former Middlebury (Vt.) College standout Reid Busby to take medalist honors at The Preserve in Carmel, Calif. with a 9-under score of 63. Christian Castillo and Jared Harvey shot a 6-under 66 and survived a 2-for-1 playoff to punch their tickets to Birmingham.

November 15

The team of Blake Humbles, a Southern California firefighter, and Connor Reis, a freshman at Saint Mary's College, took medalist honors at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. with a 8-under score of 63. They will be joined in Birmingham by Forbes Collins III and Tony Riva, who combined to card a 7-under 64 to finish one back.

November 8

Former TransMiss Four-Ball champions, albeit with different partners, Creighton Honeck and Riley Pumphrey joined forces to shoot a 66 and shared medalist honors with former Houston Cougar teammates AJ Ferries and Justin Kaplan at Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Austin, Texas.

November 2

UC Santa Barbara teammates Johnny Bush and Blake McGovern took medalist honors at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano, Calif. with a 63. The young team of Dylan Block and Zac Stout are also through to Birmingham after shooting a 64.

Some may remember Dylan Block, who as a 13-year old, caddied for his dad, Michael, at the 2018 PGA Professional Championship at Seaside, Calif. After his dad hit a wayward drive into the trees, Dylan saw what he thought was a ball deep underneath a tree in what looked to be an animal hole. It's one thing to identify a ball, but as the Rules of Golf stipulate, it must be your ball. Using his 13-year-old skinny limbs, young Dylan reached deep down into the borrowed hole and adroitly retrieved the ball. Sure enough, the ball was indeed his father's and after taking a free drop, Michael went onto birdie the hole.

October 25

The international team of Blas Ayesa (Argentina) and Juan Diego Sanchez Pillott Castillo (Mexico) earned the lone qualifier's spot out of the Butte Creek Golf & Country Club in Chico, Calif.

October 23

The Country Club of Salisbury (N.C.) will send a pair of former Wake Forest standouts in Chad Wilfong and Davis Womble along with Alex Finke and Damon Postal to Birmingham after both teams tied for medalist honors with a 63.

In a tightly-contested qualifier at the Hot Springs (Ark.) Country Club, the teams of Kory Bowman and Jason Schultz along with Michael Chaney and Creighton Parker survived a 3-for-2 playoff to punch their tickets to Birmingham.

Two more teams from the Hoosier state are headed south to Birmingham, as the Cincinnati Bearcat duo of Ty Gingerich and Cole Harris and former Indiana Mid-Am champions Kenny Cook and Sean Rowan finished 1-2 at the Prairie View Country Club in Indianapolis.

The team of Bowen Ballis and Daniel Zou shot a 10-under 62 to claim medalist honors at the Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas while Todd Albert and Kevin Liberto are also leaded to Birmingham after shooting a 65 and surviving a playoff.

At the Willow Point Golf & Country Club in Alexander City, Ala., the teams of Lee Knox and Bobby Wyatt along with Steven Groover and Tyler McKeever will stay close to home to the Country Club of Birmingham after tying for medalist honors with matching 63s.

Joshua Davenport and Gerry Jones, Jr. took medalist honors at Battle Creek (Mich.) Country Club with a 10-under round of 62. Joining them in Birmingham will be the team of Bradley Bastion and Anthony Sorentino, who finished second with a 64.

The teams of Matthew Broome and Jack Lessing along with Brad Monroe and Kevin Vandenberg shot scores of 62 at Inwood (NY) Country Club to earn a trip to Birmingham in May.

Lakewood (Fla.) National Golf Club was the scene of a tightly-contested qualifier, where the team of Blanton Farmer and Ryan Terry earned medalist honors with a 63. Jayce Barber and Toby Ragland are also through to Birmingham after defeating the team of Devin Hopkins and Matt Kleinrock in a playoff after both sides shot rounds of 64.

Three teams from The Club at Inverness in Englewood, Colo. are headed to Birmingham, led by Bryan Rusin and Chris Thayer, who earned medalist honors with a 62. The Denver duo of Charles Sahlman and Charles Soule along with Stephen Reed and Michael Urbatchka are also headed south after carding rounds of 63 to grab the second and third qualifying spots.

Two qualifying spots were available at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen, Ala. where Jackson Mitchell and Ward Harris posted nine-under 63 to secure medalist honors and earn the first qualifying spot. Ty Cole of Albertville, AL and Clay Guerin of Hoover, AL posted eight-under 64 to claim the second qualifying spot.

Leopards and Tigers ruled a rainy Radley Run Country Club in West Chester, Pa. where Towson University Hall of Famers Jeff Castle and Billy Wingerd, and Lafayette College seniors Ryan Tall and Kazuki Osawa each combined to fire 8-under 64s to share of medalist honors.

The Tiger tandem led Towson to consecutive NCAA Tournaments in 2004 and 2005. They also both earned Towson’s Male Athlete of the Year honor and were named a Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year. On the amateur circuit, both Castle and Wingerd hold two Maryland State Golf Association Mid-Am titles with Wingerd’s coming in 2017 and 2020, while Castle won back-to-back in 2013-14.

“We obviously have some great times at Towson playing together. And then, we both got married, had kids and kind of separated there for a bit,” said Castle, 37, of Baltimore, Md. “When we signed up for today’s Qualifier, we just kind of had been waiting around for it because it was so late. But glad we did.”

The sides of Zach Fischl and John Dilmer and Aidan Odonovan and Joseph Lenane fired 5-under 65 to grab both spots and earn co-medalist honors at Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, NY. Fischl and Dilmer posted five birdies, while Odonovan and Lenane finished with six birdies.

Marc Gladson and Nate Dunn took home the medalist honors and a trip to Birmingham, Ala., firing an impressive 12-under round of 60 at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside, Iowa and earned medalist honors by three shots.

The duo started off red-hot with three birdies and an eagle in their first five holes. Dunn knocked in another eagle on the seventh hole, making the team seven-under through seven holes. With a birdie on the ninth hole, Gladson and Dunn closed out the front nine with an eight-under scorecard.

Another quick start for Gladson and Dunn began the back nine. Gladson’s birdie on the 11th hole gave him a boost of confidence and he made his second eagle of the day on the 12th hole. At this point, Gladson and Dunn were 11-under after 12 holes, but a cool stretch on holes 13 through 16 opened the door for the second-place finishers, Ethan Mechling and Jon Brown to make a run.

Mechling and Brown made up three shots in that stretch of holes, but it was not enough to overcome Gladson and Dunn’s round. Although they did not earn medalist honors, Brown and Mechling still came away with the second qualifying spot to Birmingham.

September 23

In a qualifying event, it often only takes one hole to turn things around for better or worse.

Once Brandon Parker (Worcester Country Club) made an eagle on the par-5 8th hole during Thursday’s 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball qualifier at Wollaston Golf Club (6,776 yards, par-72), there was no looking back for him and Kyle Tibbetts (Framingham Country Club).

Tibbetts birdied the final two holes as he and Parker shot a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 to split medalist honors and earn a qualifying spot alongside Wollaston member Patrick O’Leary and his former University of Pennsylvania teammate Ben Cooley.

“USGA events are the toughest ones to get into,” Tibbetts said. “To be one of two teams that made it today and walk away with a medal, we’re stoked. I can’t wait to do it.”

On a cloudy day with intermittent showers qualifying for the 7th U.S. Amateur Four-Ball and 7th U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball were held at Ellington Ridge Country Club.

In U.S. Amateur Four-Ball qualifying the home course team comprised of Bradley Sawka and Jack Snyder earned medalist honors with a 6-under 66.

“I am super excited to qualify. This is our second year trying to qualify together. We started last year at Timberlin Golf Course and it didn’t go our way but at our home course this year we played really solid and got it done,” Snyder a recent UConn graduate said.

Snyder got the team off to a quick start with birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 before Sawka picked up the torch with an eagle on the par-5 5th hole to propel the duo to 4-under through five holes. Following the fast start, a run of pars ensued as did a bogey on the 10th to drop Sawka and Snyder back to 3-under. That bogey lit a fire under Sawka who proceeded to birdie the next three holes as the tandem moved to 6-under.

There was one other qualifying spot up for grabs and that went to Brandon Gillis and Mike Walker of New Hampshire. Gillis and Walker finished regulation tied with Ben and Dan Day at 5-under and were able to advance in a playoff. The Connecticut State Golf Association

Of the four players advancing from Newport National GC in Middletown, Rhode Island, three were from the Carolinas. Kevin Gately and his partner Sam Jenkins of Charlotte lapped the field, making 12 birdies including 6 in a row by Gately to shoot 61 and medal by 5 shots.

It was a lot more comfortable than the last time the two qualified, when they had to squeeze through a playoff.

“Our goal today was to get the medal,” said Jenkins. The playoff in April was fun but we didn’t want to have to go through that again. We wanted to qualify outright and make it easier on our nerves.”

John Pitt of Charleston, S.C. and Whitten Mears of Raleigh, N.C. secured the second spot after five playoff holes.

How does one qualify for two USGA championships on the same day? 2018 Tennessee Amateur champion Aaron Ingalls can tell you. On the same day that he and partner Jeff Reuter shot 63 to earn medalist honors at Harpeth Hills GC in Nashville, Tenn., Ingalls learned that he got into the U.S. Amateur after finishing as an alternate in qualifying.

The other qualifying spot was taken by former Carlton Woods Invitational champion Philip Lee and Chase Myers in the most dramatic fashion -- a hole-in-one on the third playoff hole by Myers.

In St. Louis, Sean Niles and Max O’Rourke earned the first qualifying spot after Niles birdied the second playoff hole, the par 4 9th, at the Country Club of St. Albans. Niles had a little over 120 yards in and stuck it within a foot for an easy birdie.

“For myself, it’s my second USGA event of the year after the US Am so I’m really excited to be back at that level event,” Niles said. “The USGA always does a phenomenal job so I’m really excited to be back at that. This is where my Junior PGA was (at St. Albans), so was kind of a coming home party.”

The team from the Detroit area was in the first group off on Monday morning and were the first ones in at 10-under par. They made the turn at 3-under, including back-to-back birdies to start, and were in at 29. The 7-under on the back was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5 11th.

“It’s pretty exhilarating for me, I’ve never qualified for a USGA event, haven’t even qualified for the Michigan Am, so doing this is a huge step,” O’Rourke said. “I can’t even describe what I’m feeling it’s crazy and really cool.”

Two playoff holes later, Josh Rhodes and Davis Boland punched their ticket with a birdie on No. 18. Rhodes sunk a 30-footer to end it.

How competitive was the qualifier at Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio? Four teams shot 10-under 62, four more shot 9-under 62, and five more shot 8-under 64. With only three qualifying spots available, the four teams at 10 under had to go through a 4-for-3 playoff.

A hot day led to a hot start for Nick Maccario (Haverhill, Mass.) and Mike Calef (W. Bridgewater, Mass.) at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Qualifier at GreatHorse GC in Hampden, Mass. The duo started their day with 3-straight birdies en route to earning medalist honors and return trip to the Championship

Having advanced through qualifying last year, Nick Maccario and Mike Calef were among the favorites coming into the event and they took no time to confirm why. The three early birdies were paired with a birdie-eagle stretch on holes 7 and 8 to get them to 6-under at the turn. Another stretch of 3-straight birdies starting on 12 helped put them in comfortable position. And their final birdie on 16 was the exclamation point on a stunning round.

Maccario talked about the hot start to their round “Mike chipped in on one, and I had hit mine to about two feet. Then I birdied 2 and rolled in a 35-footer on 3. So yeah, it was kind of a hot start”

“Yeah, it was a hard day, but we get off to a pretty dream start. It was great.” added Calef. “I’m playing with my buddy, we had a really fun time, we were at Chambers Bay earlier this year and unfortunately just missed match play, but hopefully we do better next year.”

It was a memorable day at The Country Club of Louisiana where the Louisiana Golf Association conducted the Sectional Qualifier for the 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship. Aaron Pounds and Jack Usner of The Woodlands, Texas fired a seven-under par 65 to earn medalist honors. Pounds and Usner had nine birdies, two bogeys, and eight pars.

Kristofer Kerr of Loranger, Louisiana and Cameron Mobley of Brandon, Mississippi shot a five-under par 67 and took the final qualifying spot after winning a three-team sudden death playoff, just moments before a torrential storm hit the course.
