At a charity event for Curry's Eat. Learn. Play. foundation, Mickelson pulled off the unthinkable
The Workday Charity Classic golf event hosted by Stephen and Ayesha Curry was played Friday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
Not surprisingly, some celebrity friends showed up to help, as they have in the past. This year NFL legend (and improving golfer) Peyton Manning made the trip, as did the master of the flop shot, Phil Mickelson.
"Lefty" has been known to take his flop shot over the heads of anyone willing to grimace and hope they don't flinch. But Steph Curry? At 6' 3" the Warriors legend was, according to Mickelson, taller than his usual attempts. But many of those shots involve him hitting over a cardboard cutout of himself -- and Phil is the same height as Curry.
With the right lie, a Callaway PM Grind Wedge (we're guessing 64 degrees) and a Chrome Soft X Triple Track ball, it wasn't even close. The ball goes vertical quicker than Curry on a 3-pointer from long range. Watch it for yourself below.
Curry and Callaway announced a multi-year partnership in 2019, and he has become good friends with Phil.
As a Callaway ambassador, Curry has been part of some recent marketing initiatives, including Callaway's position as the official equipment sponsor for the Howard University Golf Team (Stephen Curry is personally funding the team).
Callaway has also produced limited edition Chrome Soft Truvis Eat. Learn. Play. golf balls that help highlight the foundation. Curry is also featured their new #1 Irons in Golf commercial.
The event at Harding Park raised funds for the Curry family’s charity organization, Eat.Learn.Play., which serves to help end childhood hunger, ensure students have access to a quality education, and provides safe places for all children to play and be active.
According to the blog WarriorsTalk.com:
"One of the more notable parts of the day came as Phil Mickelson had Curry directly in front of him and proceeded to hit a flop shot right over the three-time NBA champ’s head. Curry was a pretty good sport about the whole thing but he was admittedly a bit frazzled. Luckily for him, he had one of the greatest golfers to play the game attempting the stunt on him."
