Wenger overcomes five-stroke deficit with a final round 65 to take the title

Justin Wenger went into the final round of the Indiana Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Delaware Country Club five shots behind Nathan Long, the leader at the time, who fired a first round score of 2-under-par, 68.

“Yesterday’s round I started off really poorly,” Wenger said. “I was five over through my first five holes, so I was just trying to stay in the tournament.”

Wenger was able to make up for the difficult start of his first round by shooting 2-under-par on his second nine to fire a first round of 3-over-par, 73.

“I thought maybe if I fired a second round of 65, could have a shot at winning, but I knew it would be difficult to achieve,” Wenger said.

Wenger, however, did just that. The final round of the tournament Wenger teed off in the fifth-to-last group, so he was able to fly under the radar. There was a three-way tie between Eric Gessner, Ross Cosat, and Long at even-par for the tournament, until the par-3, 16th, when word came in that Wenger shot a final round 5-under-par, 65.

Cosat finished with two bogeys and a birdie to finish at even-par for the tournament and come in second behind Wenger, giving Wenger a two-shot victory over Cosat. This is Wenger’s first Mid-Am Championship win and first win since the Indiana PGA Southern Open in 2013 at Sultan’s Run GC, where he defeated Ryan Ford by two shots after firing a tournament score of 2-under-par.

"It’s awesome to finally get back into the winner’s circle,” Wenger said. “I haven’t really played in many tournaments the last six to seven years, so it feels really good to get back in it and hopefully keep it up.”
