Fifteen-year-old Tanya Wadhwa of McKinney fires a closing 67 to beat a field of the top professionals and amateurs in Texas
GARLAND, TX (June 26, 2008)--Fifteen-year old amateur Tanya Wadhwa of McKinney, Texas fired a three-under par round of 67 to win the Texas Women’s Open by one shot, becoming the youngest champion in the history of the event.
Wadhwa began the day two shots behind leaders Jennifer Park and Marilyn Hardy; however she quickly made up those shots on her front nine with birdies on holes three and five. The back nine proved even better for the young amateur with three birdies, including a 5-footer on number eighteen to claim the Championship. Adrienne McDonald of The Golf Channel’s Big Break Ka’anapali was the low professional, finishing in second place. Defending champion, Shannon Fish shot the low round of the tournament, a 66, to finish at one-over par to claim second place amateur honors while also finishing third overall. Anna Schultz of Rockwall, Texas finished in a tie with Carrie Morris of Tyler, Texas for third place amateur honors.
Wadhwa emigrated to the United States from India when she was 8 years old. Because of her education in India, she was placed two grades ahead when she moved to the Dallas area. She initially trained in Florida at the David Ledbetter Academy but now receives instruction from Peter Murphy at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney.
A senior at Spring Creek Academy, Wadhwa told the Dallas Morning News that she left many, including herself, in shock that she was taking home the title. "I really didn't expect it," she said. "I just tried to stick to my game and stay focused and not worry about the outcome."
